I hate just about every aspect of air travel. Long lines, invasive security, bad food, cramped seats, and the general awfulness of other passengers can all make for a miserable and exhausting experience. Fortunately, if you get too tired, the Abu Dhabi International Airport has you covered in an interesting way.

I've spent the past couple of days in the deserts of Abu Dhabi - not far from the border with the 'women drivers will eradicate virgins' kingdom of Saudi Arabia - checking out the X-raid MINI team whilst they test their 2014 Dakar contender.

They'll be finding sand in every crevice for weeks.

The United Arab Emirates is the land of the supercars. They even give them out in malls, as one extraordinarily lucky cab driver found out this week when he won a $ 204,028 (Dh750,000) Gallardo LP550-2 in a local lottery.

Long stretches of desert highway seem perfect for speedy driving. Or they must have for one Emirati woman, who racked up 80 speeding tickets totaling 127,000 dirhams ($35,000) commuting back and forth between the United Arab Emirates of Abu Dhabi and Dubai.
