Another Mercedes post? Not quite. Oh how we love the quirky folks at BYD. No attempt to mask what they're trying here with their newly approved-for-production BYD S8 hardtop-convertible. Build you dreams for epic win-win.
First revealed in 2006 at the Beijing Auto Show, BYD has finally announced that the Mercedes SL B8 hardtop convertible is ready for production. The top doesn't actually go all the way down, but its enough to fool the local police while you stow all of your watch, bag, dvd in the rear. Okay, we kid, but we definitely wouldn't trust the potential death trap that is the folding mechanism on this thing.
Weighing in at a hefty 3,362 lbs, the two-door B8 seats an uncomfortable 4 adults and is powered by a 2.0-liter 4-cylinder engine that will pull 0-to-60 MPH in around 14 seconds. You won't win any stop light races with a VW Santana 3000 cabby in this one.
The BYD S8 will go on sale during the mid-summer months (just in time for it to be extremely hot and muggy here in China) and will cost anywhere between RMB 150,000- 250,000 ($22,000- 36,800 USD).
