Buy These Vehicles If You Want To Spend Your Money At The Gas Pump
Plenty of cars get good gas mileage. These are not those. So if you love burning fuel, this is the place to be.
We've talked a lot about the vehicles that get the best gas mileage in their respective segment, but this time I wanted to try something different. I wanted to figure out what vehicles on sale today get the worst gas mileage. Unsurprisingly, there are a lot of supercars and high-end luxury vehicles from Europe on here, but don't worry, patriot. The Americans also showed up for this one.
We've got everything from Dodge to Rolls-Royce and Bugatti. It would seem getting piss poor gas mileage can be attainted by anyone, regardless of brand cachet. One thing unites all of these vehicles though: big ol' engines. In fact, the smallest engine on this list is 4.0-liters. The biggest? Well, it's none other than the Bugatti Chiron, of course.
As of the posting of this article, the average price of a gallon of gas is over $3 per gallon, according to AAA. However, if you own one of these cars, you probably don't care about the price of gas. From what I can tell, the cheapest vehicle on this list still costs the better part of $100,000. Money isn't real, if you think about it.
Anyway, that's enough of me talking. Let's take a look at the cars with the worst gas mileage on sale today.
16. Dodge Charger SRT Hellcat Redeye: 15 MPG Combined
EPA combined/city/highway: 15/12/21
Engine: 807 horsepower, 6.2-liter supercharged V8
Starting our list off strong here. You can look at this as a sign of things to come, considering the fact that an 807 horsepower V8 only managed to rank 16th on our list.
15. Dodge Durango SRT Hellcat: 15 MPG Combined
EPA combined/city/highway: 15/13/19
Engine: 710 horsepower, 6.2-liter supercharged V8
Dodge having the first couple spots on this list shouldn't come as any surprise. Bless you, Stellantis.
14. Bentley Flying Spur: 15 MPG Combined
EPA combined/city/highway: 15/12/19
Engine: 626 horsepower, 6.0-liter twin-turbocharged W12
This magnificent engine is the better part of a decade old, and it's still wonderful. This also isn't the last time we're going to see this engine on our list.
13. Rolls-Royce Cullinan Black Badge: 14 MPG Combined
EPA combined/city/highway: 14/12/19
Engine: 592 horsepower, 6.7-liter twin-turbocharged V12
There is nothing Rolls-Royce Cullinan owners care less about than gas mileage. Well, maybe the poor, but gas mileage is probably a very close second.
12. Bentley Bentayga Speed: 14 MPG Combined
EPA combined/city/highway: 14/12/19
Engine: 626 horsepower, 6.0-liter twin-turbocharged W12
I did many hundreds of miles in a Bentayga speed. Nineteen miles per gallon highway is almost an impossibility. However, I do not care, because god dammit do I love this engine.
11. Rolls-Royce Ghost: 14 MPG Combine
EPA combined/city/highway: 14/12/19
Engine: 563 horsepower, 6.7-liter twin-turbocharged V12
Rolls-Royce's six-and-three-quarter-liter V12 pays homage to the presumably terrible gas mileage that Rolls-Royce's six-and-three-quarter-liter V8 that powered its cars for decades.
10. Bentley Continental GT Speed / Speed Convertible: 14 MPG Combined
EPA combined/city/highway: 14/12/18 (Convertible)
EPA combined/city/highway: 15/12/20 (Hardtop)
Engine: 650 horsepower, 6.0-liter twin-turbocharged W12
Get the convertible. Putting the roof down in your Bentley is absolutely worth losing two miles per gallon on the highway and one combined.
9. Rolls-Royce Phantom: 14 MPG Combined
EPA combined/city/highway: 14/12/18
Engine: 563 horsepower, 6.7-liter twin-turbocharged V12
How this manages to get worse gas milage than the Cullinan is beyond me. I don't ask questions, because I fear the ruling class will kill me.
8. Jeep Wrangler Rubicon 392: 14 MPG Combined
EPA combined/city/highway: 14/13/17
Engine: 470 horsepower, 6.4-liter naturally aspirated V8
Hell yeah, brother. The least powerful vehicle on this list has made it into the top 10. The Wrangler 392 is a lot like the McDonnell Douglas F-4 Phantom. It proves that with enough power, anything is possible. In thrust we trust, baby.
7. Ferrari 812 GTS / Competizione: 14 MPG Combined
EPA combined/city/highway: 14/12/15 (GTS)
EPA combined/city/highway: 14/12/16 (Competizione)
Engine: 789 horsepower, 6.5-liter naturally aspirated V12 (GTS)
It's wild to me how a V12 Ferrari and a Jeep Wrangler can get virtually the same gas mileage. Physics are a wild thing.
6. Ferrari Daytona SP3: 13 MPG Combined
EPA combined/city/highway: 13/12/16
Engine: 829 horsepower, 6.5-liter naturally aspirated V12
Ferrari makes too many cars. I'll just say it.
5. Ferrari Monza SP1 / SP2: 13 MPG Combined
EPA combined/city/highway: 13/12/16
Engine: 801 horsepower, 6.5-liter naturally aspirated V12
I'm pretty sure you can still technically buy these cars. That's why they're on the list.
4. Ford F-150 Raptor R: 12 MPG Combined
EPA combined/city/highway: 12/10/15
Engine: 700 horsepower, 5.2-liter supercharged V8
Back to America, baby. The Raptor R is one of the best trucks you can buy right now despite the fact it gets should-be-illegally-bad gas mileage.
3. Ram 1500 TRX: 12 MPG Combined
EPA combined/city/highway: 12/10/14
Engine: 702 horsepower, 6.2-liter supercharged V8
The Raptor R may be one of the best trucks you can buy right now, but the 1500 TRX is the best truck you can buy right now. Wanna know what puts the TRX over the edge? Two extra horsepower. I know, that isn't much, but it's enough for my dumb brain to declare a winner.
Just as a little real world note, I did 640 miles in a Ram TRX last year. Much of it was on the highway. I averaged just 10.8 miles per gallon during my whole trip. Add in the fact this thing comes with a 33 gallon fuel tank, and you're going to be spending a hell of a lot of money on gas.
2. Mercedes-AMG G63 4X4 Squared: 11 MPG Combined
EPA combined/city/highway: 11/10/12
Engine: 577 horsepower, 4.0-liter twin-turbocharged V8
I love the G63 4X4 Squared for many reasons. I mean, just look at it. But, the fact it gets the second worst gas mileage of any vehicle on sale today with the smallest engine on this list is such a brilliant triumph from the folks at Mercedes-AMG. This thing should be studied for its inefficiency. It is in a class of its own.
1. Bugatti Chiron Pur Sport / Super Sport: 9 MPG Combined
EPA combined/city/highway: 9/8/11
Engine: 1,577 horsepower, 8.0-liter quad-turbocharged W16 (Pur Sport)
Not too much of a surprise here. The Chiron has one of the biggest engines in the world. Strap four turbochargers to it, and you may be pushing out nearly 1,600 horsepower, but you're also just drinking many gallons of fuel. I suppose it's a small price to pay for one of the most incredible engineering feats of our lifetime.
