Nokian Tyres has built a concept tire that James Bond has had in his arsenal since 1987. Meet the world's first non-studded winter tired with studs that can be deployed by the push of a button.
When it comes to icy conditions, Nokian seems to know their stuff. In fact, the Finnish company is the fastest in the business.
They were also the ones who came up with the first winter tire (designed for trucks) back in 1934 and to celebrate the invention's 80th anniversary, they built a concept tire that has been in James Bond's Astons since Timothy Dalton's V8 Vantage Volante in 1987:
The problem with studded tires is that they can only be used on ice or snow and in most places you're forbidden to use them as they damage the dry road surface.
Nokian went around that problem the same way James Bond managed to kick the Soviets ass in The Living Daylights: by retractable studs raise and lower at the same time on all four wheels. The body of the stud remains in place while the moving part is the hard metal pin in the middle of the stud.
Blink twice and it might just become a product someday.
