"Maximum" Bob Lutz, the vice chairman for the General, got in front of the camera to talk a bit about his new baby — the Chevy HHR SuperSport — the same HHR esh-esh we revealed last night via press photos, and we'll be on hand for at the live unveiling later today. The lead product man for GM had us riveted with his description of the new Chevy HHR SS — up until the point he said "I could see...for instance...someone who has a Cobalt SS, but with a need for more room may well be attracted to this vehicle..." But then, just as soon as he loses us, he snaps us back to attention by explaining the "little car...seats five with comfort, and when necessary...goes like hell." But he actually sells us on it when he tells us the top speed will be over 150 mph. Have we mentioned how much we totally heart this crazy old coot of a man?

150mph? I wanna try one out. If its gonna go for low 20k sticker, i might bite...if i can get a panel version...
but
it
looks
so
silly.
Hey, everyone, welcome Wes Siler to his position as official Jalopnik contributor!
ya a panel version would be sweet
Shoehorn an awd setup into it.. up the displacment a bit for some off boost torque.. and I'd consider it..
Until then.. well.. meh..
Great, a $30K dollar oversized cobalt! Briliant!!!
it won't be mistaken for a regular HHR, but i am willing to bet an owner will get a lot of "hey that is a nice PT Cruiser", comments.
Looking at the HHRSS (hearse??) I can't help but remember the corvair station wagon...look at the taillights, and of course the Vega Kammback, MaxB speaks of "rear-end identity" I think we have the logical next-step in that great lineage. My local GM dealer is sporting a new red panel HHR in the marquis spot on his lot, having dethroned the Indy 500 pace car Corvette, but it's not an SS version, I'm sure it's just a matter of time.
@boofighter:
As it should receive those mistaken compliments. The HHR and HHR SS are nicer than the PT Cruiser by a Detroit mile.
I suspect this is a scary, wind blown ride anywhere near 150.
"Keep it straight dammit"
"I can't, there's a 2 mph side wind and we're doing 145 in a box van."
So I'm guessing it will compete with the Caliber SRT. Which will be faster/better?
Leave it to a 75 year old swiss guy to truly know what the youth of American craves...an expensive, moderately powerful bread van.
"Did something crawl down your throat and die?"
Lutz: "It didn't die!"
Someone get that idiot a glass of water. The phlegm is killing me! I would love to see that crap go 150. I imagine it would for about 2 seconds before the body kit gets ripped off by the wind shear.
Is it just me or is ole Bob looking more and more like Leslie Nielsen everyday?
Its been obvious to me this guy should be running all of GM and Ford and Chrysler should be hunting down similar car guy types to do the same.
I'll take a MazdaSpeed 3, thank you.
@WheatKing:
Find yourself an old GMC Syclone or Typhoon - take the drivetran from that and you'd have your AWD and 150MPH.
Here it is: [jalopnik.com]
that with the SS powertrain would be bitchin
Goes Like Hell...where have I heard that before?
[en.wikipedia.org]
Ohh, right.
ha ha, he said "rear end identity" :)
Notice the GMC motorhome in the background? Does that mean anything?
I am just waiting for the Mazdaspeed3 HHR SS comparo.
Also this new GM product has entirely too many letters in its name. Can't they call it the Breadvan SS or something. Actually saying H-H-R-S-S is just too much trouble for this sort of vehicle.
Yeah, Bob, the Germans just don't build wagons that can reach 150mph. They all reach 155mph and would go a good deal higher still if the Greens there hadn't forced them to artificially neuter their engines. Plus, their cars don't need "rear end identity" to compensate for the fact that the front bumper looks like it fell off a snowplough.
I've never yet heard the man give an interview in which he didn't say anything really embarassing.
One day he's going to snap and stab Thomas Friedman and a lowly Toyota executive in the face with a suspension arm, then go on a rampage through lower Manhattan running people over in a fiery Corvair.
@rgseidl: I tihnk hes referring to other sport compacts.
Lutz is plagarizing ol' Carrol Shelby who originally used the GLH moniker on a Dodge Omni way back in the 80's.
What's the integrated rear spoiler for again bob?
At least GM is finally having a crack at something that appears pointless to regular commuters, but is insanely misdirected and therefore attractive, for those whom sanity is a forgotten ideal....like me
