We're about to be in the midst of the neo-classical phase of automobile design, led by Japanese automakers like Mazda, Toyota and, with its new Intima concept, Nissan. That means we'll be seeing a surge of panel surfaces that appear to have been carved by wind over centuries, rather than by short-sleeved guys in horn-rimmed glasses over a working week. Nonetheless, we're most likely looking at what US buyers will get as Infiniti's new S-Class competitor. The concept is powered by a diesel V6, which could hearken a European face-down in the near future.
Press Release:
Nissan Intima Concept
A New-generation Saloon for People with a Sophisticated, Discerning Eye for Beauty - Who Enjoy Spending Time in Refined Elegance and Comfort, Whether Traveling Alone or with a Partner
Intima takes Nissan's Modern Living Concept into a new dimension with an interior that invites passengers into an extraordinary world of artistic forms, materials and illumination.
The front passenger's seat swivels approx. 80° to the outside, as if to welcome and escort a passenger into the car.
Exterior styling that matches the interior's artistic image, with a design that combines sharp-edged lines and organic panel surfaces. Rich elegance is conveyed though Intima's arching side character line, while the crystal-like appearance of the front and rear lamps, grille and wheels project an image of superior quality and refinement reminiscent of jewelry.

Is there some sort of design contest to stretch the headlight assembly all the way back along the fender to the doors? And shouldn't a Q-ship have headroom for the back seat occupants?
Nissan should take a mulligan on this one and design something which will actually sell in the US.
Still unanswered is the question of whether a dragon would get intima with it.
Suicide doors! Yay!
suicide doors.. seats that rotate.. does it come with an LP player in the dash as well?
And whats with the chrome wheels? According to non-northamericans.. chrome is just a tacky thing we do.
Change the name to "Ultima" and make it the Nissan flagship car in the States with the Maxima behind it in the lineup and you have me as a customer.
It looks like Infiniti is starting to get intimate with organic shapes again. I can picture the ad campaign now, rocks, water, trees..... oh wait a minute, they already did this!
the new Q?
well aside from removing all the concept bits it looks kinda cool if not almost Toyota Avalonish
Err, this looks like a copy of a CLS to me: [www.supercars.dk]
intima means "intimate" in italian... specifically it's also a pseudonym for women's underwear... they need to change the name
@yellofury: Agreed. I see the resemblance to the current M35/45 and could see this coming as Infiniti's new Q.
This thing has FWD proportions; the wheel well almost touches the front door. Maybe it's the new Maxima.
The dimensions are quite a big smaller than the current Q. This is a Maxima preview.
Over at FreshAlloy, someone who's seen the next Maxima body says it has CLS design cues and is about the size of a 7-Series. This concept fits that description pretty well, eh?
Also, the concept is filled with design elements consistent with the SE Asia Teana/Maxima. These include the side DLO, bangle-butt rear deck, tail lights, exhaust shapes, IP layout and door panels. The four seat layout is also consistent with the NA Maxima Elite Package and the front clip looks like an update of the current NA Maxima/Altima (but is definately not Infiniti like the G, EX, M, FX et al).
Nissan and Ghosen have already said that the top of the range next maxima will have the 3.0 diesel power plant, another clue that this concept previews the Teana/Maxima.
I'm betting this is a preview of the SE Asia Teana/Maxima. If Nissan merges that car with the NA Maxima (which make sense from an economy of scale standpoint and that the Teana is much more luxurious than the NA Maxima), we could also be looking at the next Maxima available here next summer.
I feel like I've been nay-saying alot and I'm sorry to all, but I smell Toyota Camry and Avalon too.
Or, is that vanilla???
Oh... same thing.
@exige+ducati749s: So if it's painted yellow.. is it a dropped pair of panties?
@WheatKing: Only if the engine has started burning oil and sending the results out the tailpipe...
BTW, after about 100,000 miles, aren't all Nissans oil burners?
@DrivingPosition: Dunno, but they can be brake burners waaaaay before that.
I like the design especially the swooping beltline curve. It does remind me of the CLS, though, and the rear lights are very cool but cannot look at it without thinking of the CLS as well. But you know, it's got enough of the current Nissan identity around the hood and the grille that I think they can get away with it. After all, the car is supposed to attract a demographic who would like a Merc perhaps but cannot afford it. I would love to see a more original approach, but that may confuse the said demographic. I like the looks better than the current Maxima myself...
I'm still waiting for the Masturba concept.
@SuperCarnitas: You'll have to look in the Acura(te) booth, next to the Integra(te).
That would make a neat-o speedboat if you turned it upside down...
Nissan to Mercedes: Bite Me.
Pretty soon both front fenders will be nothing but lens.
