Everyone knows about Evel Knievel's ill-fated attempt to jump the Snake River in a rocket-powered motorcycle in 1974, but who talks about Ken Powers' ill-fated attempt to jump the St. Lawrence Seaway in a jet-powered Lincoln Continental five years later? It's your classic heroic-dream/downward-spiral tale, set against a backdrop of Canadian late-70s ennui and replete with incompetence and betrayal. Enjoy.

Those Kens was batshit looney, eh?
What, are there no engineers in Canada?
No one to tell him it obviously wouldn't work?
A high school trig and calculus class could have told you that.
I think the Continental's aerodynamics weren't exactly ideal, what with the body panels peeling off and all. They should have used a TR7.
The parachutes did a nice job of preventing him from actually going very far while at the same time only marginally slowing his descent. Brilliant!
I was gonna say, deploying the chutes before actually leaving the ground was a stroke of genius. Next time I go skydiving, I'll try that.
His wife would have been better off with the book deal than having him back safe and sound
We don't call them Crazy Canucks for nothing! In this case though, Retarded Canuck might me more appropriate.
What the hell were they thinking? Shoulda used a Mitsubishi Pajero! (Didn't you run this jump sometime in August '06? No worries, I'm still laughing out loud at this one.
Now Ive got to go watch 'Hooper' again, thanks
I think Evel Knievel tried to get a law passed making it illegal to misspell his name.
I gotta give this guy props for trying to get across in a Lincoln Continental. That's style. Evel's contraption wasn't even really a motorcycle, it was a rocket.
Both suffered from premature parachute deployment though. Weird. Maybe both of them rigged it, knowing if they really travelled any distance, they would be pulped upon landing.
This is why 70's Daredevils were F*ing awesome!
Forget "Math" and "engineering", just strap a jet to a gigantic MK-IV Lincoln and add some little "wings" and cross your fingers and step on the pedal..
Evel was the same way, despite that Robbie has broken all of Evels records. you get the idea Evels jumps were formulated somewhere between last call and the first "hair of the dog". I can just see him rolling over to the passed out hooker next to him and saying "im gonna jump SO and SO... That guys has SOLID BRASS balls, and anybody who has seen the jump he did in the cow palace (a jump he went into knowing he didnt have enough room to land) knows this.
I am gonna have a Shot of JD tonight for my Boy Ken!!
I'm 99.9% sure Jalopnik has posted this video before.
Not that I've got a problem with that - The Yellow Bird around the Ring should be a monthly requirement.
How many times do you have to break your back doing something you love, until you learn to love something new?
At least eight times, apparently.
Brass balls and low self esteem: dangerous formula!!
A mile!? Even the General Lee couldn't do that.
Here ya go:

I've seen that video a bunch of different times, but "sajeev"'s comment on previous posting kinda takes the fun out of laughing at it.
Although I really do wonder what he expected to happen should he actually clear the river. It's not like the car would just land on all 4 wheels and drive away. There's not much of an exit strategy there...
This clip is probably from The Devil At Your Heels. Which is well worth watching.
Incroyable! Continental's just dont fly, but kudos for trying.
Mad_Science - Sajjev's post sounds like a bit of Urban Legend to me. If you check this out: http://digg.com/videos/comedy/Greatest_Car_Stunt_Ever_Atte... you can see that several posts report that Ken Powers is still very much alive and performing stupid stunts today.
Proof that Kenny Powers is still alive and as mental as ever:

i belive i can fly.... i belive i can touch the sky...
i belive i can die... i belive i can touch the ground...
why they put some "mini wings" in the side?? this lincoln is aerodinamyc as a brick!!
