While we've had some fun with the current-gen R8 as powered by the 4.2L FSI V8, we're more than pumped to see that the brits at evo were able to snap some pics of a thinly disguised R8 said to maybe be carrying the new 5.2L V10. They claim that the new V10 will be available in late 2008 and should put out numbers in excess of the M Power V10 currently doing duty in the M5/M6.
That means that you're looking at horsepower above 500 hp (they're saying 520 hp) at above 8250 RPM. They're also saying that this V10 is based on the current mill, and not the V10 found in the Gallardo/RS6. Sehr gut, ja? Let's just hope this tester is carrying a fire extinguisher. Thank for not re-purposing the current lambo motor. One more thing, V12 TDI.
FIRE!
Oh wait, that joke was made in the article...
good call TEARGAS on the V12.
The V12 TDI will never make it, and the V10 will probably be de-tuned. Lets not forget that VW won't let the R8 compete for sales with the Bugatti Veyron.
The Bugatti appeals to a TOTALLY different audience. Nothing to worry about there.
My rumor mill says V10 diesel, and it's a well-connected mill.
This reminds me: I spent the day after Thanksgiving wandering the L.A. autoshow, muttering under my breath about what a lucky SOB Murilee is for getting to drive and review the R8 for Jalopnik. Part 1 of the review showcased his clever writing and photo documenting skills...
How long until we get Part 2...?
That V10 had damn well beeter come in diesel. I really, really, want to see a diesel torque monster supercar. This is an idea that is long overdue. Imagine pulling stumps out, trailers, etc. with a sports car. Too wicked!
