Spy Photos: I Am The Corvette SS Powertrain Mule

Why yes, that is the new Corvette SS (or whatever) powertrain being mule-tested at — well, we'll just let the guy who just lost his job by posting these on a forum explain where they are from:

"lufthansa cargo in michigan. we got a redz06 and a regular orangec6. the z06 has some black tarp on the hood and the fenders, i cant tell if its a centr. supercharger its to dark outside...ok its gotta be supercharged i just saw a intercooler."
Yup, full gallery below — just 'cause we love ya...a lot.

UPDATE: The individual who took the photos, an employee of the shipping company EMO TRANS, is now in jail. Here's what we know.

  • Nice setup, I hope the guy had his resume updated.

lol Betreying your company and sending sneak peak pics to a blog is tempting isnt it.

    hahaha

  • I'm sure we'll be seeing spy shots of this thing at the 'Ring next week.

  • wtf is that? An aftercooler? what is this magical component that Behr is providing GM for its extracurricular heavy breathing activities?

  • It's an intercooler integrated into the intake manifold.

  • I'd almost think this was a deliberate leak to garner excitement and divert attention from the bad headlines but GM is far too dumb to do anything like that.

  • A few things I've noticed:

    - Dry sump with battery in the rear like the Z
    - Supercharged with intercoler integrated into the radiator
    - 2 piece floating ceramic calipers 6 pot front/4 pot rear
    - Larger master cylinder (have the same in my car, larger capacity, larger bore)
    - seems to have larger vents after the front wheel well to help the engine compartment breathe better

The source at one of the big vette sites that basically leaked all the product codes for this and all the new models had one comment - whomever posted this will be fount dead in the Detroit River. I dont know if there is any doubt, but these are real.

  • Sorry sources say intercooler integrated into intake manifold. The picture there might be a high capacity radiator.

  • intercooler integrated into the intake manifold = aftercooler

  • Intercooler/ Aftercooler. Its all semantics. Technically an intercooler is between stages of compression. An aftercooler is after stages of compression. If you count the combustion chamber, then its an intercooler. If we start talking 5 stage high pressure air compressors...

  • "that is NOT the LS9 going into the C7 vette...."

engineer who works on the ls series

  • "that is NOT the LS9 going into the C7 vette...."

as mentioned by an engineer who works on the ls program

  • Erm..who said anything about the C7? The LS9 is going in the Vette SS.

  • it might just be me, but the pic of the exhaust tip looks to have some sort of butterfly valve action going on in some of the muffler outlets...

  • Meh, I wouldn't call it a butterfly. If it was a butterlfy valve the the edge would be shiney, not covered in carbon, and it would be creating witness marks on the tube.

I'd call it part of the baffle system.

  • The exhaust tips do look interesting though. Some sort of actuator, and moveable components. The outer tips look blocked off?

  • Ben - check the actuator visible above the exhaust pipe. I believe it's a butterfly valve.

  • Ben/Etc: It definitely is a valve; the Z06 has that valve as well. It closes the butterfly at low RPMs to increase back pressure and torque (and decrease noise) then opens it at higher RPMs to decrease back pressure, increase horsepower and noise.

I'd assume that this is similar, if not exactly the same.

  • Oh snap! You're absolutely right. See kids, there's the diff between a shitty low res CRT and a nice bright HD plasma - witness marks AND an actuator.

What could these tricksters be up to? variable backpressure? variable flow? But why?

Another issue I'm having with these pictures is still that intake situation. The routing is just bizarre. Normally an aftercooler is after the supercharger. If that's what that hunk of metal is (and I can only assume it's an air to water cooler taking into account the hoses running to and from it), why is it on top? And look at the routing for the actual air intake. The electronic throttle body is offset to the drivers side. Very strange if it's a roots/screw type charger.

  • @BenWojdyla: The 599 Fiorano also has this valve which looks and acts like a butterfly valve but apparently is not a butterfly valve.

  • I'm betting that the Behr-labeled box is indeed an aftercooler, with the supercharger packed down into the engine valley to reduce overall height. The offset throttle body feeds the side of the blower, compressed air exits to the top, through the cooler and then back down into the cylinders.

  • WHEN are those guys gonna get some class with their engine-art? Can you see a plumber's nightmare like that under that clear hood on the Ferrari ?

I am also waiting for the day when they FINALLY quit screwing around and put them grille teeth from the '57 SS into that gaping hole in front.

That, and get rid of the Batman headlights, and put them big bugeyes of the racing Callaway in thar !
