OK, we're flummoxed. We've no idea what the heck this Ferrari is that was spotted outside of the R&D center of the prancing horse in Maranello. We're guessing it's a powertrain mule — but of what kind and what purpose, we've not got the foggiest idea. We're wondering if y'all — or perhaps the nice people at FerrariChat might be willing to hazard a guess as to the identity of the mystery mule. Full spy report from our magical tipster Kevin Welker (who knows a thing or two about the sound of an engine) after the jump and higher-res shot located here.
"I was in Maranello last week and caught this mule pulling out of the R&D center of Ferrari. Not sure if it is old news as a 2010 Dino or some shooting brake concept that would get everyone at Jalopnik all hot and bothered but I thought I would pass it along. It sounded like a V8 to me as it pulled away."

Spinelli disappears to Italy for a few weeks... steps down from Jalopnik's top spot... and now this...
I smell a conspiracy!
A new breadvan?
@EmilGH: That's totally it, Emil.
Utterly mystifying.
I like the Boxster nose....
It's obviously a FWD, 3.14159 litre, Bio-Hydrogen, hybrid, mini-UTE concept.
too much "Don't look at me, I am just a matte black powertrain mule"
Aren't power train testbeds usually only in slightly modified existing cars? Lots of body work to conceal something you can't see in the first place.
There has GOT to be more photos.. something on the back of that car.
I'm hoping it's a shooting brake. (Jeez, this Kevin guy seems to know a lot about us.)
Of course I know a lot about you guys, I'm a commenter here also ;)
I have no more pictures, that was with my camera phone and I was damn lucky to get that. My Nikon D40 was turned off and I only had a couple of seconds before he sped away. none of the Ferrari factory workers I bumped into at the bus stop knew what it was either.
its probably for the sultan of oil-rich-istan or that glickenhaus guy. or just a test mule with a campershell.
I like the Mach 5 front end and the paint scheme. Not a big fan of the rest.
It's the new Ferrari Aztek. Can't wait to see the hand-sewn leather tent attachment.
I was thinking Daytona nose @Rust-MyEnemy:

"its probably for the sultan of oil-rich-istan"
Great! Thanks @vwminispeedster:. Now I need to clean coffee expelled via my nostrils from my keyboard.
Yuk!
Ferraramino!
@CEman: But it's 11 PM here and I've been drinking. Yeah, Daytona is more sensible.
@gotsmart:
More like Ferrarifalia
I can see a white panel van with roofrack and the text "Bubbas plumbing" on the side.
Looks like a modern Dino to me on the front end. I'd also put money down that the back end is a fake roof line like the X6 spy photos we've seen.
I think it is a Maserati folding hardtop. It is going to be inspired by the Maserati Tipo 151.
I think the nose is very Maserati-ish. Like GranTurismo front end with a F355 rear(look at those rear quarter windows). Probably held together with lasagna noodles and duct tape. Rearends's really tall though, wonder what that's for?
It's a hearse... (sp)
I'm betting that raised rear is nothing more than a lifted camo tent. Take it away and it has some nice lines.
@Wes: That'd almost require a palace revolt, no?
@JanTheMan: Or "Luigi il Lattoniere"?
I'm holding out for a reborn 250 GTO breadwagon...
Its a panarama beater. Or a truck. OH NO A TRUCK>
It's most likely the test mule for the hard top convertible Maser GT.
Maybe there is alot of motor in the back?
@j6r:
Nice pull!
It's the new Maserati 151.
@j6r: Oops. Good one. Pays to read all the comments first....
@Wes: My first thought.
the Ferrari Meals-on-Wheels Spaggetti!?
