The Japanese side of the Carlos Ghosn love child, the automaker Nissan, has teamed up with animation studio Production I.G., to remake the full-length feature "Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex - Solid State Society." Why Nissan, you ask? The better for product placement, we respond. The science-fiction film, set in the post-cyberpunkian Stand Alone Complex (S.A.C., hehe) world stars both former special agent Batou and more importantly to us — two Nissan concept vehicles: the Sport Concept and Infiniti Kuraza (both originally introduced in 2005 at the Detroit Auto Show). The movie, scheduled to debut in Japan this fall and in the U.S. and Europe in 2007, was originally introduced to the Japanese public in 1995 and has influenced numerous blockbuster films, including "The Matrix." And although this may all seem like cartoons to...
...the untrained eye, "Stand Alone Complex" is actually a deep reference to the phenomena of emergent behavior catalyzed by parallelization of the human psyche through the cyberbrain networks on a societal level. In this phenomena, there is no original, there is no leader. What ties together the disparate and unrelated individuals is the systematic motive encoded into the basic informational flow itself. This concept of an ever normalized ego into the fabric of society recalls the writings of Philip K. Dick, among others. Plus cause it's anime, there might be boobies. Hooray, boobies!
