Mazda released a statement yesterday indicating that vehicles aboard the fubar'd car-carrying ship, Cougar Ace will not be sold at dealerships as new. But — and here's ther part where you feel around for your wallet — repairable cars would be "made available for sale as used cars through Mazda's dealer network in the U.S. and Canada." Of course, that doesn't mean the company will sell damaged goods, but it does likely mean the factory warranty won't be in effect. Still, for transparency's sake, the company is listing VINs of all affected cars on www.mazdausa.com and,www.mazda.ca. For all of those interested in buying one of the salvaged Mazda3s or CX-7s, this is what an Atlantic Salmon looks like. Click through for Mazda's account of the Cougar Ace's plight.
From Mazda Motor Corp:
The Cougar Ace sailed from Japan to North America with just over 4,700 Canadian- and U.S-bound Mazdas aboard. She became stricken when an issue during a routine ballast-water change caused her to list. Thanks to heroic efforts of the U.S. Coast Guard, all 23 crew members were transferred from the ship within hours.
After the ship was stabilized, she was towed by her owners to sheltered waters in Dutch Harbor, Alaska, where she was returned to an even keel. She is currently under tow to the Port of Portland, Ore., where she is expected to arrive on September 12 (the same date in local time). Upon arrival, her cargo will be further evaluated and unloaded.
Headquartered in Irvine, Calif., Mazda North American Operations oversees the sales, marketing, parts and customer service support of Mazda vehicles in the United States, Canada and Mexico. Operations in Canada are managed by Mazda Canada, Inc., located in Ontario, Canada, and in Mexico by Mazda Motor de Mexico in Mexico City.

Why would you say that they wouldn't have the factory warranty? Every used car I have ever bought has come with the remaining factory warranty (assuming there was time/mileage left).
Oooh, I work over in Northwest Portland, not far from where they unload all the purdy new cars. I should head over today and check out those wet Mazdas...
I wonder what kind of prices these things will have? A salvaged Mazda3 would make a great Production class rally car...
An Atlantic Salmon in the Pacific Ocean would be an invasive species - most likely the result of a storm damaged fish farm (Atlantic Salmon grow faster than other salmon). I'm just sayin'...
FYI, over at the Cargo Law website, there are some pictures of the Mazdas inside the M/V Cougar Ace.

Some look fine. Others, not so fine.
Wish I had time to keep paging through that website--but never did find any pictures. Maybe I'm just slow today.
yeah you guys need to post the good pics of the ship completely on it's side at that link Jon posted:

At 6:45 am when I posted this, the "Atlantic Salmon" thing seemed like a funny joke. Now, ten hours later. I can't for the life of me imagine what the hell I was thinking. That's scary.
Well, one could imagine a fish flopping out of the glove box or something... or perhaps some mafia reference, although I doubt a mafia guy would drive a Mazda. I got ya.
Mazda now says that they're scrapping all the cars. Boo.

@Jon: Going to be at the rallycross on Sunday? I was thinking the same for those poor cars. If only I could afford to get into stage rally...
BTW everyone, unlike the Atlantic Salmon, I only have two anal fin rays. Chicks dig 'em.
