I Am Apple's Car: The Aptera 330 MPG Concept Vehicle

Yes, we know it looks like what would happen if an iPod and a Plymouth Prowler had a child (and yes, we think it would be named 'Steve II' or 'Steve IIe'). But this little concept car from Accelerated Composites was built with a number of specifications in mind. They are:

# Less than $20,000
# 12HP CARB certified Diesel engine
# 25HP DC Motor
# Regenerative breaking control
# Automatic CVT transmission
# 64in front wheel track
# 173in length
# Weight of 850lbs
# 0-60mph in 11s
# 95mph top speed (electronically limited)
# 330 MPG at 65 MPH

Not bad. We'll take the 30 GB one.

  • Looks like an evolution of the car from Woody Allen's Sleeper: http://images.google.com/images?q=woody%20allen%20sleeper%...

  • It looks like a crappy 3D model that will never see the light of day. "WOW, there is a CHROME TEXTURE! I'm gonna use that! Look how cool it is!"

  • Regenerative breaking control
Wow; that's a special feature indeed. Control when things break, and have them regenerate... Cool! (or is it perhaps braking?)

  • So, basically they made a concept that *claims* it would do all of those things...but it doesn't actually *do* any of those things... I can make a spiffy looking car and make all sorts of claims about it, too. 2 Quotes come to mind: "In theory, theory and practice are the same. However, in practice they are not." "You are awarded no points, and may God have mercy on your soul"

  • that car will never make it be cause there is nothing like it almost every car ever made has a simularity to another and has a few diffent body panels but this is out of the wold the onl reaason this would make it because ohhh the gas milage be cause our idotic oeople in the world think were running low on oil

  • I think its biggest problems will (I say "will", they'd actually have to build it first) come when someone crashes an 18-wheeler into it. Splat.

  • Um yeah, I posted this observation over at the Giz, but whoever is pitching this needs to put down the Unix station and pick up a pencil. You can't run a 25hp motor with a 12 hp engine continously - not unless somewhere these guys figured out how to break the laws of thermodynamics. Energy output can never be greater than energy input. On the other hand, they could be running the 25 hp motor at 11-12 hp output, but then why buy a 25 hp motor? Perhaps they are using the supercaps for acceleration at 25 horses. I know its possible to get that kind of mileage, I've done it with a 5 hp briggs engine in the SAE supermileage challenge, but that was nowhere near roadworthy and I was 18, so it doesn't count.
