General Motors Death Watch: Losses Mount

    gm_logo.gif

According to a report by manufacturing and management consulting firm Harbour Consulting, we'd be amiss not to resurrect our General Motors Death Watch series — if only as counterpoint to all the blue-ribbon press on its employee discount program lately. According to Harbour, GM lost an average of $1,227 per vehicle in North America during the first half of 2005, compared to a loss of $139 per vehicle for Ford. A Harbour executive elaborated: GM supports approximately three non-workers for every one of its workers, eliminating any chance for profit the company has. To add a dose of humiliation to the results, Toyota, Honda and Nissan, none of whom are weighed down by ultra-generous union benefits, all make more than $1,000 per vehicle.
