We just watched Al Gore, former Veep and teller of inconvenient truths, talking some truth to power today in front of Congress, where he had a very important message for the politicos: "Don't single out cars and trucks...it's only a slice of the problem." He then made clear he thinks we shouldn't expect automakers alone to be expected to solve global warming. Gore then walked out and hopped into his Cadillac Escalade with baby seal-hide interior...yes, the one with performance suede inserts, side-seat bolstering and runs on straight crude oil. OK maybe not, but it's a helluva lot more funny than him jumping into a Prius. Although, to tell you the truth, that'd be pretty funny, because he's a pretty big guy.

He can drive his SUV's all day and night back to his mansion that costs thousands of dollars a month to heat and cool, but it's alright with the rain forest, because he buys lots of carbon offsets.
Can I insert a huge rolleyes image?
Really, I'm all for people wanting to save the environment, if that's really what they're trying to do, which this hypocrite isn't.
@grzydj:
Hey, at least he, unlike 99.9% of eco evangelists, seems to know that not all the blame rests on the automobile. That's worth something, if you ask me.
@TomAnderson: Preach it, brother.
@TomAnderson:
Agreed, but his flights in his personal jet, and his very environmentally unfriendly mansion reek of hypocrisy. He does everything that is supposedly adding to global warming, at rates much higher than the average consumer. It's ridiculous.
Al Gore brought common sense to Congress, this could never have occurred in the just-deceased Republican Congress of last year.
This would make a good video game, 'Intelligence Vs. Fundamentalism', will Brains beat the Troglodytes, will Truth defeat Ignorance, will Good win out over Evil, will this nation survive the Bushism maladministration?
Tune in to the Impeachment Trials. Even if we have to hold them under water, due to Global Warming.
Al Gore is such a hypocrite! It's almost like impeaching the President for cheating on his wife then doing it yourself. No! For lying under oath--no...that's pardonable. For saying you're compassionate then driving up the poverty rate--no! that's the free market that's doing that.
I give up. I can no longer remember the meaning of the word "hypocrisy."
Where's MY friggin' 12-step group?
@TDoff
May I suggest a catchier epithet, e.g. "Neocon Invaders from Beyond the Pale".
All your carbon offset are belong to us!
I'm removing all of the catalytic converters from my WRX when the warranty expires in a few months, but I won't feel bad about it because I'm going to buy a bunch of carbon credits to offset all the pollution I'll be happily emitting. Until then, my turbo waits impatiently, chocking.
Like so many of these guys, Gore wants you to modify your behavior to "save the earth." But to ease global warming, he doesn't feel he needs to change his own behavior. Or is it global cooling this week? No, that was the early 90s celebcrisis. How much dinosaur juice does he burn jetting to and from his speeches where he charges $100k? Or fuel to heat his home and pool? Or caravan around in a line of SUVs? This guy bugs me because of the exaggerated half-true messages and because of his hypocritical actions.
The only reason he's sucking up to the Automakers is because the Democrats have the UAW in their pocket.
Um -- anyone here care to explain specifically how Gore hasn't changed his behavior?
Details, please
Seriously folks, Big Al hasn't time to spend sitting around idle, waiting for his Solar panels permits to show up...nor can he forsake his transportation requirements of his heavily burdened duties of office.
As far as his mansion's utility bill is concerned, why don't all you armchair critics just try...once, to host a gathering of a hundred or more...in your nice ecenomical little rowhouse, or your crackerbox on wheels, or whatever. Such events are routine at the Gore household.
Yes, I am indeed weary of kneejerk rhetorical backlash.
Of course Al Gore is full of crap. His campaign has very little to do with actually saving the environment but more with his own political awareness.
Anyone remember 'Senator' Gore's campaign in the late 80's when his big hoopla was the get Explicit Lyric Warnings put on Motley Crue, WASP, and Twisted Sister Albums?
Now he's just found an issue that appeals to a broader audience.
I'm sick of the environmental extremists
@Edsdesk:
So it's okay to have a mansion impress special interest groups and lobbyists even if it isn't "green"?
I don't think that lets him off the hook.
What a waste of reading....
what? no one is mentioning the zinc mine? or how tipper wanted to label (ban) music?
too many people want to sacrinde on him because he is not georgebush
For what it's worth...
Gore's home uses more than 20 times the national average
http://www.tennesseepolicy.org/main/article.php?article_id...
Yes, but only if they limopool to the event.
While I wouldn't come out and say Gore is a hypocrite, because he does very well to front an eco friendly facade. However he is definetely misleading people. For example:
The Prius he touts is, in reality, more environmentaly damaging than any of the armored SUVs in his convoy:
The nickel and cadmium, both toxic heavy metals, for the batteries is mined in Sudbury, Ontario, Canada. Poisonous gases and other pollutant by-products of this mining have essentially killed off all the vegetation around Sudbury, so much that that astronauts have used the land around that area as training for the surface of the moon.
From there the materials are shipped to Europe where the batteries are manufactured, THEN they are shipped to Japan for installation into the cars.
As you can imagine, this is a tremendous waste of energy, shipping these resources on enormous boats, or planes around the world. I read up and found this information in various places, i dont have the sources at the moment, but its just one example of how these eco-do gooders dont see past the surface and the PR of the subject.
Jesus Red Herring Christ!
Could you guys be any more distracted by non-sense?
@bored383:
got ya covered on both ;)
@jonnylieberman:
This stuff really gets under my skin lol
BS bugs me
Bored383, sacrinde is not a word according to the dictionary. What does it mean?
@danio3834:
You realize most of that article was a hoax, and that the pictures of the barren landscape were taken in 1972 right?
The information remains current today. I live a couple hours south east of sudbury, not much has changed. I think the point of my post remains valid.
to ride sack
@bored383: ROTFL! That needs to be a t-shirt!
Johnny do not go nut on me for saying this:
I see Al Gore like I see professors that can teach others well but cannot practice what they teach.
Similar to an old electrical engineering prof of mine that taught many a great engineer or scientist but for the life of him could not survive a day in industry. By definition he was a hypocrite but nevertheless aided society for the better.
@Ray Wert: I can't lay claim to it . . . its the product of drunken typing by a scooter nut I know
remember kids, don't drink and type!
@zolielo:
I'll differ with your analogy in that your professor's hypocrisy doesn't undermine public perception of electrical engineering in general. Environmentalists should be as concerned about Gore's actions as anyone. As the de facto leader of the American environmental effort, its credibility is tied to his own.
If the public thinks the messenger is a hypocrite, they aren't likely to listen to the message. Who is going to heed his plea to reduce their energy consumption if his continues to increase? Who is going to bother to replace a few blown bulbs with more energy efficient ones if it has taken him 15 years since writing Earth in the Balance to get around to doing that in his house? Who is going to turn their furnace down a degree or two if he has a heated swimming pool...in TENNESSEE!
If you are going to make a career preaching conservation, your house should be a freaking showcase of energy efficient technology. Otherwise, your message is hollow.

its not an inconvienent but unfortunate truth that climate change is a reality. Warming or cooling, doesn't really matter,it's going to change the future status quo. What's also unfortunate is the main spotlight isn't on the facts but on a guy who's message is looked upon as "hollow".Common sense doesn't make a good soundbite, and basic well-rounded thinking tend to be basically ignored by media as uninteresting. Unfortunate indeed.
I don't need Al Gore to tell me what is right. And I certainly don't measure myself against him or anyone else. I am just going to do what I need to so I can sleep at night.
In other news, AlGore is rumored to be purchasing calorie offsets from anorexics on Hollywood Blvd.
Crunch all ya want Al, we'll make more...
If you were born and have lived, you too are a hypocrite. Since 95% of Gore's claims are factual, I will give him a pass. Any you can work for things that are for the common good, last time I checked.
The fact that Gore -- or any other person with his workload -- jets around the world or has meetings with large amounts of people, or has been known to be seen in large American-built vehicles is not what I would call hypocracy.
I haven't seen the film, but does Al Gore tell YOU to abandon all your energy-consuming ways and live in a tree house? Of course not. He DOES advocate for policy change that would give consumers and manufacturers incentive to change what arrives in showrooms and what cars you & I may buy in the future.
Is this now unAmerican? Is this wrong, or bad thinking, or somehow damaging to your lifestyle? Should we also line up all the vehicle safety advocates who took away your precious right to drive a car without a seatbelt or airbag? Are you criticising the guy because you don't want to see different, new vehicle choices in the future, or because you're afraid that manufacturers aren't going to figure out a way to make their cars cleaner? Do you guys who claim Gore to be a hypocrite actually believe that Gore has done more environmental damage than the average American, or do you just like to think so?
Whatever it is that some of you dislike about an advocate of energy conservation and energy policy change -- especially one who invests his own money into renewable energy credits -- I would really like to know.
It seems that some of you just like throwing stones, rather than seeing someone challenge automakers to actually implement some serious powertrain improvements. If there's anything the US automakers need right now, it's a dramatic increase in federal vehicle regulations. That would put some US engineers back to work, give you and me better cars, decrease fuel imports, and maybe even keep junk Chinese cars out of the US for another decade. Not a bad side effect of global warming, if only Wall Street would take the long-term view for once.
No self-respecting Jalop would listen to Gore's rantings- MOST of the time. Clearly, this is a super-rare moment of sanity for old Al.
