The New York City Subway Of 1948

Stumbling across this map of the New York City subway system from 1948 served as a cool reminder of what used to, and in some cases still does, lurk below the streets we drive on every day. More »

Embeded RFID Chips Add Big Brother To New York Driver's Licenses

For just $30 extra, New York state residents can opt for a new Enhanced Driver's License (EDL), complete with RFID chip. But why would you want to shill out that extra coin on top of the $50 you already have to pay for a normal license? The selling point is that the radio frequency identification chip in the EDL allows a humble state ID to act as a passport of sorts. It can be scanned by authorities to identify US citizens entering the state from Canada, Mexico, or the Caribbean...though we're not sure exactly how you're supposed to get into those countries in the first place without an actual passport. What about privacy and security concerns? Oh, don't worry; the government has measures in place. More »

Vintage Trailers Brought Back To Life At Former Air Force Base

Having lived in the notorious Irvine Meadows West trailer park, which was all about Project Trailer Hell vintage tin, I can state that Airstreams pretty much suck for any sort of extended habitation. Bank Robber Gets The Disguise Part Right, But Getaway Civic's Rare Color Leads To Arrest

It seems that Honda sprayed half its early CRXs white, but not many regular Civics got that color, especially not by the late 80s. The rarity of white fourth-gen Civics proved to be the undoing of Thomas Kenney, the Lawn Guyland resident known to police as the "Bad Hatter." Mr. Kenney wore some great hats during his robberies, and he even thought to bandage his fingertips to avoid leaving prints... but DNA traces on a dropped bandage and the rarity of white '89 Civics with no hubcaps unraveled his criminal master plan, and now he'll be stamping out license plates for brand-new Civics for the foreseeable future. NYC Congestion Charge Sputters And Dies, Your Cab Still Stuck In Traffic

We've told you before about New York City mayor Mike Bloomberg's proposal to charge New York drivers eight bucks to enter Manhattan during the day, a proposal that was carefully researched, drafted, approved of by Bloomberg, and then buck-passed to Albany, which people are always surprised to hear is the official capital of New York. Well, it seems the folks in Albany handled the controversial proposal with the courage and vision you might expect: they allowed the voting deadline to pass without touching it — Now, the city's out $354 million in federal funds intended to help get the plan rolling. NYC Congestion Charge Moves Forward, Your Cab Still Standing Still

The New York City council has just approved the plan to charge up to an $8 fee to enter sections of Manhattan south of 60th Avenue. The plan was passed as a "home rules message" — sort of a plan to have a plan system which tells the state Senate Legislature to pass a bill a certain way. Whatever, that's just New Yorkers making things overly complicated. Let's just say the possibility has been raised that sometime in the near future, driving in Midtown will feel more like traffic and less like a seething hell of cabs and anger. Suzuki Kizashi Concept Could Debut Soon

Well, Suzuki seems like they're pushing for some school yard respect. Motor Authority is spreading a rumor that the company will be coming at us at either the New York Auto Show or Chicago Auto Show with a revised Suzuki Kizashi. We first saw the original Kizashi at the Frankfurt Auto Show and it was the stuff dreams are made of then. This time, it seems the car will more closely resemble the kind of thing people might actually drive, telegraphing a possible production model. The new concept could be equipped with a V8, as well as all wheel drive, replacing the hybridized four cylinder in the older concept. That's the kind of revision we can get behind. Rudy Giuliani's Corvair For Sale, Squeegee Men Tremble

When we found out from Eric at CorvairProject.com that the '66 Chevrolet Corvair convertible once owned by presidential hopeful Rudy Giuliani is for sale, we spent a few minutes just imagining how great a Giuliani-versus-Nader presidential race would be. The debates might start out with Rudy trying to slap his customary "Hero of 9/11" label on every statement, but they'd quickly degenerate into a snarling match over GM's omission of a rear swaybar and collapsible steering column on the early Corvairs. Giuliani last owned the car in 1996 and it's been sitting ever since, so it probably needs months of some work.[eBay Motors] More »

Homeland Security, Police Officer Busted In Car Fraud Sting

More than 60 people found the offer of a chop-shop that would let them report their car stolen too good to refuse, including an employee of the Dept. of Homeland Security, an NYPD officer and a director of a city hospital. Really Short Commute: Yankees Datsun Bullpen Car!

The well-heeled New York Yankees fan might choose to drive a pinstriped Rolls-Royce, but what if you don't got more louie than Phillip Rizzuto, yet still want to show off your pride that Steinbrenner's warriors are still hanging on in the playoffs? Well, you could get an early 70s Datsun B210 1200 and recreate the bullpen car used by the '72 Yanks! Back in the day, when Nissan was trying to make a name for itself on these shores, they made a deal with the Yankees (and LA Dodgers) to use the B210 1200 as bullpen cars. We're just hoping that some Fu-Manchu-mustachioed pitcher with a head full of greenies used the car to do some donuts on the outfield- hey, the legendary Nissan L engine deserves no less! Bloomberg's Subways and Suburbans

NYC mayor Michael Bloomberg is taking flak for making part of his much-ballyhooed subway ride to work in a chauffeured Suburban. His people pick him at home and drive him twenty blocks down to 59th Street, where he picks up an express train to City hall. Still, compared to Antonio Villaraigosa's trouble of late or our own often late, MTA buses here in Los Angeles, we might encourage our mayor to spend a bit more time on public transit and less dallying with reporters.
