Apparently Ford's uprated Shelbyfied Mustang GT500 — the GT500KR or "King of the Road" — is getting a touch more horsepower than expected. According to Blue Oval News, after Carroll Shelby visted Ford's Dearborn Proving Grounds this past Friday, Ford increased its horsepower projection of the KR from 540 to 550. Was Ford being coy in the face of competition? We have no idea, though with the top-line SuperSnake on the way, sporting 600 or 725 horsepower, such tomfooligans are wholly unnecessary. I love the idea of two Mustang models with >500hp, but I'm probably not going to buy either at any point.
Where I wish they'd spend money is to either make a lighter, sportier 300hp GT, or bring the Euro Focus here. AWD RS? Yes, please.
Actually...that has me thinking...we always complain about how lame the US SVT Focus is Vs the E-spec go-fast one. Maybe it's so as not to cannibalize Mustang sales with a performance car someone would take seriously...?
Give me a GTO with a Magnacharger and a Spec 3+ clutch and give you back about $25k in change.
Pretty though. I'll give it that.
Meh. Not impressed.
Ugh. Bitch bitch biiiiitch. Shaddap and eat your greens. This car is gonna be awesome.
@crewcutkid: Yeah, of course it's going to be awesome...unfortunately, there's kind of a glut of awesome around $75k these days.
I'd rather see "teh awesums" in abundance at a lower price range.
@Mad_Science: For $75k, you could get an RS4 with an MTM supercharger, independant rear suspension, and nicer interior, not to mention nailing hotter chicks and avoiding some lesser speeding tickets just because you look like you make more money. Then there's the whole 40/60 Quattro thing, in case you are in to snow and/or motorsports. Almost forgot, now you can have your Avant and blow it, too ;)
I'm not saying this car has nothing going for it, but why would you take a Mustang over that, unless you still eat 'freedom toast' for breakfast with your Folger's? Bruce>>>'Murrican pride
I would buy American, if only they were better engineered interior/suspensionwise and came with a first aid kit in the rear armrest.
@Turboner: Yeah dude...that's what I was trying to say.
The "basic" GT500 at 500 hp makes sense it its own tire-melting power-oversteering stoplight champ kinda way.
550 or even 700 hp isn't going to increase the market any more (particularly as you'll be grip limited under 100mph). Sure, it'll be awesome as a purpose-built drag car or something...
...but if Ford's going to be paying teams of $80-100k/year engineers to make cars more awesome...I'd rather they did it elsewhere (see previous comment)
Why? Just, Why?
I found ten bucks in a pair of jeans this weekend. It's like Ford is doing the same with horsepower.
Yeah it is awesome. But I'd like to hear about these guys working the horsepower wars with some clean diesel engines. I want to be able to buy something guilt free that I can use to waste self important hybrid drivers with as I'm burning bio. It is possible to be forward looking without giving up the ponies.
I keep hearing rumors of a 500+hp 6.4 Hemi for the Challenger.
