    Coop Hits the Swap Meet

The one and only Mister Cooper got together with SeƱor Jalopy and belly-tank Bobby to hit a Model T swap meet in the fine city of Long Beach. As one of the few art critics Los Jalops intrinsically respect — as he himself has a bit of the old artist in him — we dig the man's take on the inherent majesty of the layout of parts on row after row of high-school gym tables covered in whatever's handy. Tin Lizzie-ownership fantasies will soon follow if you've got an American red blood cell in your body. [Positive Ape Index]

BMW 1-Series Spotted in Long Beach, Cal-i-forn-i-a

Long time Jalop lurker and new buddy John spotted a BMW 1-Series on the streets of Long Beach, sans badging, and nabbed it by cameraphone.
I saw this on my way home yesterday (along Ocean Blvd. heading away from the Ports of LA & Long Beach) and didn't recognize it. No badges, but it had dealer plates and was following another beamer (also with dealer plates).
Although a new, 1-Series coupe is reportedly headed this way, it won't likely be a hatch like this one. (It'll be the one with the trunk). Some company man's probably just having a bit of a laugh. Still, it cruises the LB as if it belonged there. We could almost picture Dub Allstars and the Carpenters sharing a sandwich and gossiping about inline sixes. More »

Peterbilt Goes Hybrid, We Applaud Peterbilt

In San Pedro there is problem. And the problem is transport. We hammer on this point like Sweet Peet on his "product, product, product" mantra, but the movement of goods in and out of the harbor has created a massive air-pollution problem. One application where we see hybrid technology as especially beneficial is in medium-to-heavy-duty, short-haul vehicles that require serious torque to get up and go. Just like the container-bearing trucks that clog the southern terminus of the 710 at practically all hours. Peterbilt (East Bay, represent!) apparently agrees and will be displaying two new vehicles at the Hybrid Truck Users Forum next week in San Diego. (Who knew there was such a gathering?) More »

Road Rage Against the Machine: Out-of-Control Car Slams into Gas Station

Police say it was a road rage incident that led to a woman's car careening into a gas station in Long Beach, Calif yesterday. The car slammed into another pump before starting a fire. Neither she nor a passenger were injured, but video of the incident from CNN shows the driver of another car, while uninjured himself, escaping from the blaze, then running back to get something out if his car — as if the it were not right next to a gas-fueled fireball. C'mon, who's never seen "Bullitt"? More »

Ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach to Clean Up

The other day, Bumbeck said to us, "Man, I may as well just go back to smoking," in reference to the air quality in LA. He's up in the hills, while we're at the tip of the Palos Verdes Peninsula. We're also three blocks from the Port of Los Angeles, which, combined with the Port of Long Beach, create the busiest port facility in the US, and the fourth-largest in the world. What's more the ports handle a mind-boggling 40% of the cargo to enter the United States each year. And due to the ships' massive two-stroke diesels burning high-sulfur fuel and the aging fleet of short-haul trucks used to ferry cargo from berths to railcars, it's also a source of massive air pollution. Officials have just revealed a plan to change that. More »

    Hydrogen Hoedown in Long Beach

"Scream for me Long Beach! Scream for me Long Beach! The Graf Zeppelin!" Okay, maybe those weren't Bruce Dickinson's exact words, and maybe there won't be any dirigibles in attendance (although the Goodyear Blimp flew over an hour or two ago, and Long Beach is the next town south of us here in Pedro), but the National Hydrogen Association opened its annual conference to the public today. Held at the Long Beach Convention Center, it features fuel-cell cars, manufacturers and energy producers, all coming up with ways to better use nature's lightest molecule. Explosive! More »

The Gray Race: Bad Religion to Rock Long Beach Grand Prix

Beer, babes and Bad Religion. Kind of an incongruous combination, but that's the lineup for Saturday night after the Long Beach GP KROQ's Rock 'n' Roar show, followed by the Tecate Miss Toyota Grand Prix of Long Beach pageant. Still, we caught BR in Austin a year and a half ago, and they turned in the best set we've ever seen them play. After all, got our first speeding ticket listening to their 1990 classic, Against the Grain, which to this day, still remains one of our very favorite records. More »
