Exclusive First Pictures of KITT From The New Knight Rider TV Series: Yes, It's a Shelby GT500KR

UPDATE: Sources with the involved companies tell us this is the real car — the actual car to be used in the show. But, because "it wasn't working at the effects studio yesterday," someone did photoshop the red light. UPDATE #2: We now have the official first images from the folks at NBC and Ford here, and the exclusive first video of the new KITT available here. Our detective work's paid off on yesterday's rumor on the new KITT. Now not only do we have off the record confirmation from the "involved parties" that KITT will lose the GM third generation F-body (and legions of mullet-swinging fans), but also that he'll be moving up a few steps on the horsepower ladder. That's right, everyone's favorite talking car (no, not spelled K-A-R-R) will be played by a black-with-gray-stripes 550 HP Ford Shelby GT500KR Mustang in the new Knight Rider TV show. And thanks to a very helpful tipster who's preference is to remain anonymous (we don't blame 'em) we've got the proof to show you — photos taken from inside of the vehicle build facility out in LA where they're prepping the new Knight Industries 'stang for Cylon-like close-ups. Yes friends, this is the new KI Two Thousand — who wants to touch it? I said, who wants to touch it? OK, well how about just your two cents? Anybody?

Maybe the acting will be really, really good.

  • ..and Hollywood fucks up another movie on a simple detail. Knight Rider isn't Knight Rider without the mullet mobile.

  • There's No Sunbstitute for "Da Hoff!"

  • Image of strider_mt2k strider_mt2k at 01:11 PM on 11/29/07 *

I think what's his name should cameo as a rehab director.

  • KITT not a Trans-Am? That's just wrong..

  • Seriously. They should have gone the route of Starsky & Hutch(not the best remake, but better than most of the other complete crap) and kept all the 80s stuff.

  • so these shots are just photoshop until we get the real thing then right?? I guess it kinda makes sense that knight ind. would use a pony car

  • I was thinking that they'd have the Hoff provide the voice of KITT, and have William Daniels be the sleuth who drives it.

  • Aren't the GT500s stick shift only? Actors can't shift, I'm sure this is just a V6 with a body kit.

    Still, it looks pretty good.

  • Knight Rider with grey stripes? Blech.

All black is the way to go.

Also @ Delroy666: agreed. I mean at least pick a car that resembles a Trans-Am... I love these Shelby's but not for KITT.

  • @delroy666:Thank you Captain Obvious.

  • well, I think that the right person with enough talent could make a KITT out of just about any modern bad-ass car. The mustang wouldn't have been my first choice, but I think it can be done. However, this looks like they just slapped some chaser lights on a regular-ole GT500KR. The original KITT had a whole host of things done to it - interior and exterior - to separate it from it's donor trans-am. I'm disappointed.

  • I'm looking forward to the TSB issued by Ford the covers how the sentient onboard computer causes a significant power drain and may cause the battery to die prematurely.

May as well have used a Focus with Sync.

Thinking about it, secret agenty type people always drive stupid, stand-out-sore-thumby cars like Astons, 500KRs....

Stick 'em in a grey Focus and go deep, deep, deep undercover.

  • Didn't we see this car in the Transformers movie ;)

...ok, it's different, but not by much. I think they should have gone retro, maybe a little "Steampunk" even.

  • LOL a Mustang?! Not to say the original Trans Am wasn't a piece of crap but this takes the cake.

  • lol, it must be a joke...

  • Ford is just lining themselves up for another special edition 'stang.

  • Dunno. Looks vaguely Photoshopped.

But I gotta admit, worrying about what car they use to replace the silly, ugly rattletrap Trans-Am that was the original KITT is like worrying about who's going to play Mimi in the re-make of the Drew Carey Show.

Or what the devil will be driving in the remake of "Crossroads." Or who'll replace Ralph Macchio in the same movie.

Ought to use a Koenigsegg CCX. This mustang looks like they opened the pep boy's catalog to the mustang page, and ordered one of everything.

  • Image of SwatLax SwatLax at 01:26 PM on 11/29/07 *

Don't you get it? They picked the Mustang because it fit in the alpha-numeric naming system.

    GT500KR = GT500KingoftheRoad = GT500KnightRider

If the show was called "Knight Xavier" or "Knight Xenophobe" the would have likely gone with the Acura MKX.

  • Image of SwatLax SwatLax at 01:26 PM on 11/29/07 *

    @SwatLax: <-needs edit button.
    Lincoln MKX

  • i can deal with it being a ford, but they gotta lose the stripes and the cobra badging

if the rumors that hoff will play the dad to a michael knight, jr, then there's no reason why KITT can't still be tooling around!

I'm sure GM and Ford wouldn't allow it, though.

  • They should update it for Knight Industries after the tech bubble burst. Out of funds and now run out of a trailer - KITT with rusted rear quarter panels, a cracked windshield, dangling exhaust, and fast food wrappers littering what's left of the floor. The voice interface long since failed, the Hof now spends his time in one sided conversations with a TomTom.

  • Barricade would totally bitch-slap KITT's ass and call him a sissy.

  • Image of FUT DA POLAЯICE FUT DA POLAЯICE at 01:31 PM on 11/29/07 *

This isn't Knight Rider, this is Pony Rider.
And the car's name is PITTS (Ponycar Industries Terrible Tubba Shit)!

  • I wonder if the new kitt uses nawz instead of a big ole turbo light..

  • so basically you've given us shots of a black and grey gt500 that somebody photoshopped a blinky red bar onto

i'm not saying the rumor of a mustang KITT is incorrect. just that those pics reveal nothing.

  • Ugh. Not a Mustang for the love of all that is holy not a Mustang. You know, I'd be satisfied with them sticking to atleast Pontiac and going with a GTO (not going to happen I bet) or atleast the Solstice GXP. Just not the Ford Mule.

This is about as bad as some moron taking a classic Transformer, Bumblebee, from being a Beetle to a Camaro... oh, wait, that's already happened.

  • Image of Mad_Science Mad_Science at 01:37 PM on 11/29/07 *

Aside from Turbo Boost™, it's not like all the technology from the original KITT is all that hard to come by now.

Talking cars? Scanners/Navigation, hands free phone? No problem.

If they're going to wow us, (or at least the 8 year old inside us) they're going to have to do something more impressive than run-of-the-mill Lexus features.

  • @SwatLax: or you mean the Lincoln MKX. or the Acura MDX. damn letters! regardless, those would make some truly hideous KITT's.

i think when i was a kid, and why i thought KITT was cool: it's because it looked all hi-tech and futuristic, with the body kit, and cool wheels, and the steering wheel. this mustang...that doesn't look futuristic. hell, they picked a car that has retro design cues. all wrong. and lose the stripes.

  • They need to rename this show "Dick Rider" since only a bunch of pricks could screw the pooch like this. It's amazing how low we continue to sink in the wonderful world of network TV.

  • Image of Ray Wert Ray Wert at 01:43 PM on 11/29/07 *

@Mastodon: That's the Mustang that's in the show and that's a lightbar in the hood.

  • Image of Ray Wert Ray Wert at 01:44 PM on 11/29/07 *

@Ray Wert: What more do you want?

  • The show is going to tank. I give it one season before reruns are being played on Spike TV channel.

  • I smell photoshop.

  • @cgraham: agreed. and it'll have five more hp than a V6. but high schoolers will still buy them. and the mustang "mystique" continues: why the hell does anybody buy these things!

  • Is it me or does this K.I.T.T. photo look F.A.K.E. ???

  • I'm starting to really despise this generation of Mustangs.

They look like they hit a hard wall at high speed resulting in the ugly snub nose and the loss of the grill.

And have you ever seen the interiors? Good lord, I guy I work with has one and I swear the dashboard is made by Mattel.

  • @mainfr4me: i was ok w/ that for two reasons: 1. they made it into a cooler, more futuristic car. and 2. they had a beetle parked next to it at the dealership scene, at least paying homage to it.

  • This doesn't look "futurey" enough at all.

However, seeing as there is no TA to use, and an older one would be even less "futurey" I don't know what else would work.

I have no problem that its not a Pontiac. The make of the car was in no way integral to the (cheesy) plot of the show. I say keep it a domestic rwd(not really integral either, but nostalgic perhaps) and anything sporty could be a KITT of the future.

  • i didn't know there was going to be a tv series. It's probarly going to suck, but i could be wrong.
should have stuck with GM though

  • @raven1: Agreed. Aside from the show, who else can use the power of music to assist in tearing down the Berlin Wall? Nobody. That's who.

  • @Ray Wert:
look at the front 3/4 shot. and look how sharp the outline of the red light bar is. there is zero red light bleeding onto the hood, and yet the light is "on"
also, there is no difference in shadow from the furthest point to the closest point. it's a flat image cut out.
and the red comes too far into the lips of the scoop.
it's not a sharp image, but the light bar is surprisingly clean....

also the light bar looks EXACTLY the same across the three pictures despite the fac that they are at different angles

  • So, Hollywood is going to remake a stupid show that starred a mroon and a POS car. And they are casting a modern POS car for it.

At least that are keeping to the original.

  • That should have read "moron"

Why can't I type the damned words?!

  • Fog Light Reflection in Paint... CHECK.
Turn Signal Reflection in Paint... CHECK.
    Headlight Reflection in Paint... CHECK.

Big Red KITT Light Bar Reflection in Paint... NOT FOUND.

Sorry I can't sign off on this one.

  • Ok I can see why they chose a Mustang. They will use the special model for close ups. Then for the far away, look it can get hit by a missle and survive, or turbo boost shots they can use a standard mustang which they can buy on the cheap. How I see it is that the lack of any cool features KITT could have that don't come standard on todays luxury cars will cause them to do more indestructible shots or look what we can jump shots to wow audiences.

Secondly, the original KITT wasn't painted black. It had black indestructable panels installed to replace the original body work. So how are they going to explain the racing stripes and non deep black color of this car. I am not buying it. This shouldn't be the car.

  • From: FEEDS.AUTOBLOG.COM: TRACKBACK at 01:58 PM on 11/29/07

Filed under: Coupes, Sports/GTs, Etc., Supercars, FordThe rumor that K.I.T.T. will be played by a Mustang in the upcoming Knight Rider TV series appears to be true. That is, assuming someone with a lot of time on his hands didn't mock up a Hoff-ified Mustang just for the hell of it.

  • Image of Rust-MyEnemy Rust-MyEnemy at 02:02 PM on 11/29/07 *

I'm not usually one for conspiracy theories, but I'm calling fake too.

In the close-up, owing to the poor camera there is digital noise everywhere except the light bar.

    Yep. Busted.

  • I kinda miss the bowling ball wheels, but I havent taken my meds today either....

  • I still say Nissan GT-R. In all black, that thing looks EVIL and more futuristic than the Mustang.

Plus the interior is ready to go. The producers will have to spend money mocking up the interior of the Ford to make it appear cutting edge instead of cutting corners.

Besides there is already link between the show and Nissan:

"The third generation Trans Am was Larson's initial choice of car. However, in very early pre-production, pilot producer Harker Wade was looking to use a Datsun."
    - [en.wikipedia.org]

In the early 80s, I would agree with Larson. Early 80s Zs are cool, but the Trans Am fit better.

  • It's going to be tough for the new KITT to turbo boost more then TWO TONS of flabbie american car off the ground with this one.

  • I, for one, say the glass is half full. See, they made the hood scoops functional.

  • So that mean there going to send some of these GT500s to their adrenalin fuled cinematic death? That's just fine with me, it might even be worth watching just for the pleasure.
