Jalopnik Precast: Cinco De Mayo Edition

jalopnik_precast_mac_new.jpg

Mr. Thomas' final precast features commentary on the new Lexus, automotive magazines attempting satire and Mr. Farago's distaste for reckless automotive racing. Quite a finale.

  • "It was confusing." GASP! Almost like reading... oh, nevermind... And just because Johnny Neff posts something doesn't mean it's news. Those Lexus prices were announced on April 9. If It wasn't for those bastards at AMI you'd probably have received a fax about it.

  • it was on the LExus media site posted as news May 3rd. That's where i saw it. Our post actually went up before Autoblogs.

  • Death Race 3000 is a very needed idea. Frankenstein!!!

  • Who's John Neff? I don't get out very much. But I will tell you, whoever he is -- he's no Nick Aziz. That guy only posts the news and truth when he's absolutely sure of it, like the Gullwing Merc or Chrysler "dumping cars in mud lots" . Yup -- truthiness is paramount in his work -- no doubt about it. And on top of never posting that type of crap, he certainly never plays the other side of the lane without analysis -- like direct-from-the-PR-reps-mouth crap like "GM's image is improving in the media." Yup. Totally. So like I Left out of what I said earlier: "Who's Nick Aziz?"

  • Sorry to bother you but I can't get my Jalopnik Juice (aka iPodder, don't think evil) because the last Precast available is dated May 1. So is the Audioblog feed rotten or what?

  • Sorry they're working on it -- something to do with Audioblog's side we think.

  • Gullwing Merc? I never said I was "absolutely sure of it." All I said was publication xxx reported yyy. It's quite simple really. Is it wrong to give Mr. Lutz his chance to say something? Again: xxx says yyy. I never said *I* agree with it or that it is true. Anyone knows that. See, it's called reporting the facts. The FACTS are that someone said something. Nothing more, nothing less. Do you think your/our readers are that dumb? No one cares about some two-bit blogger's opinion -- they want the facts and they make up their own mind. I'm surprised they even hired you here at Jalopnik. But then again, they have been a bit like the red cross lately. Go back to you riddle writing...

  • Deleting posts? Afraid of the truth? LOL! you're a joke Raymond.

  • I'm not going to get into this war but "No one cares about some two-bit blogger's opinion -- they want the facts and they make up their own mind." shows that you don't really know what blogging is actually about and why it is such a popular medium is indeed the opinions. LLN is basically a news aggregator, nothing more, nothing less. And while some people like that, it's not really as engaging to some others that appreciate wit and wisdom at the same time. It's also not really good blogging. And personal attacks on ray, myself etc aren't really good retorts either.

  • Who is Raymond? And what post was deleted?

  • Aziz! Light!

  • Hey Nick, outta curiosity, what post did we delete that yanked your chain so hard?

  • First: We did't delete anything. Secnd: I'm not going to get into this war but "No one cares about some two-bit blogger's opinion -- they want the facts and they make up their own mind." shows that you don't really know what blogging is actually about and why it is so popular is indeed the opinions. LLN is basically an aggregator, nothing more, nothing less. And while some people like that, it's not really as engaging to some others and its not really good blogging. And personal attacks on ray, myself etc aren't really good retorts either.

  • I do know what "blogging" is about. I should know, since I've been involved in it for the last 5 or so years, and I've worked for so-called blogs that have been industry leaders for the past decade. There are different types of blogging, though I never called LLN a "blog" -- it's just a site that uses a blog platform. I'd argue that what makes blogs great is not the opinion, it's a) the format b) the focus and c) the reader interaction. The format is easy to follow and sequential, with content being the focus. Blogs are also great because they tend to focus on very specific topics, and they religiously catalog the latest happenings in those niches. Lastly, the reader interaction is great. As even Mr. Calacanis has said, blogging is like a matured discussion forum -- you have a starting topic and then readers can share their opinions and feelings. Ironically that's a failing of the Gawker sites -- they use an elitist invite-only comment system instead of an open one. Very un-blog-like if you ask me. Before MySpace, LiveJorunal, and Blogspot, weblogs were different. They were like Slashdot. Yes, they were essentially filtered aggregators. The term "blog" has largely been hijacked to mean high school diaries and a political pundit's rants and raves. To tell you the truth, I don't really see Jalopnik being a site with much opinion in its posts, aside from Farago's excellent reviews and editorials. Rather than offer commentary on everything, Jalopnik seems to have use a wacky writing style to differentiate itself. And frankly, if people like it, that's cool. Some blogs try to sound amateurish and opinionated to be "hip" or "bloggy." You say it's a popular approach, but I disagree. WIN's mac blog has a fraction of the traffic as our mac site, and it hasn't seen hardly any growth lately. Anyway, enough about blogs. I know my style works, and yours is fine too. My problem with Ray was that he lamented me for posting that Chrysler story, even when I CLEARLY said LLN could not confirm it in any way. He still hasn't dropped that issue, and I can't understand why. I think Chrysler is great, and it was in no way an anti-chrysler post. Again, i was just reporting the facts and stating who said it.(And based on several replies to the post, it seems that the story was true). When a "blogger" says "this is bullshit these people hate chrysler, don't listen to this guy," that's not analysis, that's bias.

  • To clarify -- There's a difference between ANALYSIS and OPINION. I'd agree that what people like Mr. Farago and Jeremy Clarkson do is an eloquent analysis of a vehicle. There's logic to their arguments, and they base their statements on factual observations and experiences. Unless Ray has first-hand proof that the dirt field story was NOT TRUE, then he shouldn't say anything. I clearly stated in the post it's know know if it's true or not.

  • You see, Aziz, we got that same "tip" you did over at BackOfTheHand News. In fact, like every auto blog on earth got that "tip." But we didn't publish it. Why? Because when we e-mailed the guy for details he didn't and couldn't provide any. So we did something we like to call "research". You may not have had any classes yet where you can learn this skill -- but trust me, they're out there. Just look. So little Nicky, just to be clear here -- the reason I know the "dirt field" story isn't true is because I went out for drinks with managers at two of the largest Chrysler dealerships in Metro Detroit. Both of them said that's "so wrong it's not even funny -- that shit doesn't happen in the Detroit area -- maybe elsewhere in the country -- but not here." It's called fact-checking, and I urge you to try it sometime. Now, I can't argue for what is and what isn't J.C.'s concept of what a blog is, and really I could care less. What I do know is that here at Jalopnik we're honest about our sources, our stories and give credit where credit is due. You sir, do not. You are a bottom-feeder hitting at the lowest common denominator -- an aggregator -- and frankly, Google News is a helluva lot better at it than you. So don't come over here and throw down a gauntlet on our turf, mm kay? You wanna talk trash and not back it up -- do it elsewhere.

  • That's it, no more sleepovers until you boys can get along.

  • A bottom feeder that beats you on every single real news story? (you know, real car releases, major announcements, etc). What are you talking about giving credit? Every story has a source cited. And you believe some sleazeball dealership owner? LOL! Why would commenters post testimony of seeing the same thing if it was just imaginary? Did you suck his dick too? Fact checking? Ya I see you all did that right here. http://www.jalopnik.com/cars/spy-photos/spy-photos-new-new... ::shakes head:: Because the guy can't provide you more details that means what he saw was fake? Please. You seem to believe what you WANT to believe. In this case, that's Chrysler can do no wrong. Maybe you're just jealous because you're a nobody -- a Spinelli wannabe with a thorn up his ass. Please, go back to your 300 hit a day blogspot. That seems to be goin real well for ya.

  • Don't get me wrong. Jalopnik is a great site. But Ray, you're a miserable satan child.

  • Oh, and your Google News comment is completely ludicrous, and not even worthy of a response (you don't "back it up" in any way). If you think 90% of the people that go to jalopnik come for a reason other than to get the latest news then you are sadly mistaken. You don't have the right or the experience to say anything about blogging or the Internet business. There's a reason your greatest accomplishment is being the equivalent of Jalopnik's secretary.

  • Actually, I'm Satan's handmaiden -- but thank you. "Aziz! Light!"

  • Nick -- let's use this as an example: Jalopnik Post at 11:00 AM: Top Gear post LeftLaneNews Post at Noon: Top Gear post redux And that one's really funny -- because you have ZERO citations for the photo, the story idea, or even where you heard Top Gear was going to be starting their new season this Sunday...and the chances you happened across an idea in your mind to run this post one hour after my idea to run the post...is slim to well -- none really. It's called integrity -- learn some, dude -- then come on back here and act all hard if ya want. Aziz! Light!

  • Wanna know the truth with that one? Someone emailed me about it way earlier and I started to write it, then more important things came up and I said "to heck with this" and forgot about it for a while. Then I saw you posted it and I said "oh shit, gotta get that up." I considered the post on TopGear's site basically to be a press release (which it is, really), and getting the word out was clearly their goal there.

  • See, if it was a true find on your part I'd say so. Such as this. http://www.leftlanenews.com/2006/04/25/top-gear-relives-me... You know full well that we link back and forth, but sometimes we don't. It goes both ways and we've had a good relationship. Shit, I probably would have even given you a VIA for that top gear thing, even though I had already started it. Problem is, ever since Mr. Thomas came on there are no links to LLN. Which is fine, but I was just playing by the changed rules. I know Mr. Thomas hates me because I was mean to MPH.

  • Mr LLN, I'm here only for the opinion (aka the wit [quintessential American humor, IMO, which is surprisingly hard to find elsewhere, nevermind in a vehicular context]); your a) b) c) is nothing more than a digitized buff book, which the majority of jalop readers ain't interested in.

  • camp6ell, I can't argue with you there. You know why you come to the site, and you may be right that's why many others come, as well. However do keep in mind that a massive portion of the traffic to this site and its competitors comes from search engines and people linking in -- all of which relates to the merit of the news items, not the humor.

  • "And personal attacks on ray, myself etc aren't really good retorts either." This coming from the people who have a regular column dedicated to personal attacks on journalists? Jalopnik is an aggregator as much as any other site. It's a glorified one, admittedly, and it does have the occasional review, but mostly it posts links like every other goddamn formulaic blog in your sidebar, with but a paragraph of comment. That's not content creation, that's using someone else's content to sell ad space. Neither is invoking Clarkson in any way appropriate; he may be credited with destroying the Vectra and Rover, but he's an entertainer first and a road tester a distant second, which is not something he bothers to hide. Most importantly, he writes a weekly hour-long show, a weekly Times column, a monthly TG mag column, and TG mag features. He has a style of his own and he churns out content by the bucketloads, which is a lot more difficult and admirable than banging out a hundred words on a given topic. I've read Clarkson, and you, sirs, are no Clarkson.
