Godzilla To Hit U.S. Shores In Limited Quantities

Nissan will send just 1,500 of its new GT-R sports cars to terrorize American streets with the twin-turbo 3.8-liter V6. GT-Rs will only be sold through select dealerships, determined as dealers who are proficient in selling cars that pretty much sell themselves (those with high 350Z sales) and are willing to install a special service area and train service staff in the art of GT-R. You can place your order beginning Jan. 1, 2008, but don't think about getting in line before checking your bank account. You'll need $69,850 to get into a base model and $71,900 to wrap your hands around the steering wheel of the top-level model.

$69,850 to $71,900 - Plus how much 'fuckmeverymuch' tax to be the successful bidder for exclusive first year 'yesimanasshole' ownership?

    69,850 = +/- 90,000

    71,900 = +/- 100,000

I am afraid of the spoiled "street racer" kids who will take these and make them look like ass.

On the other hand, they will be the guinea pigs for the US test market on the GT-R

So have fun and watch for recalls.

Yup, I wouldnt expect to get your hands on one for MSRP. They'll all be sold to the highest bidders and make the dealers rich.

  • This has got to be the ugliest car I have seen in a very long time and I drive a WRX.

Um, guys, I have an apology to make.

I have been, er, something of a naysayer on the subject of new GT-R over the last month or so.

Unfortunately, I have since been to Japan. Where I sat in, scrutinized and listened to a GT-R.

Oh, jeez. It is ridiculous. Mental. Animalistic. Fire-breathing. I have just paid MIT to research some new cliches for me to use, it's just That. Rad.

Even the looks, which I clenched at slightly before, I now understand. Nissan were deliberately intending the car to not look pretty. Instead, it looks like nuclear war. In combat, it could take on an A10 Thunderbolt and win on sheer brutality.

Truth be told, I'll still take the Maserati over it. But this time, it's not because I don't like the GT-R, I love it with every fibre. It's because I'm a wuss, and I'd look a dick in a GT-R.

But all you guys who can drive like the Stig, just do it. Just for chrissakes on't buy it to pose. You will be found out, hunted down and neutered. Probably.

  • Godzirra

It's almost is much fun to type as it is to say.

I actually have no opinion on the car itself. I'm sure it's badass, I probably won't be getting one.

I just like to say Godzirra.

  • Awesome, so this thing has been benchmarked against the Porsche Turbo, and by the time you get done paying the dealer markup, you would have been able to buy a Porsche Turbo...

Which brings up a good question. Lets say the markup gets up to $30k. At $100k before tax, do you get this thing, or do you spend the extra money and get the GT3?

    I think I'd get the GT3...

  • @POLAR: Bingo.

The "Gold Level" Nissan stealerships that get them won't know how to handle the demand in any other way than asking 10g's over sticker.

It's all good that these everyday car brands are making these badass cars, but it's like shit into a fan when it gets to the distribution channel.

  • @-chet: Expect a 20% markup, and maybe just to start.

  • I wonder if the local nissan dealership where I live will get it.

  • this thing is going to be around for at least 6 years. just wait. if you need a new car now buy the german.

if you just want to touch the new beast. give the dealership hand the best test drive he has ever been on

  • @Rust-MyEnemy:

I hope to bring the experience stateside as soon as it reaches antique exemption status. That description made me smile...

  • So will the GT-R do to Porsche what the 240Z did back in 1970?

Some one once said people collect Porsche's not Nissans.

    Bah.

I have one of each. (944 Turbo and 1970 240Z)

Nice job on this car, Nissan. You could have spent 1/4 as much developing a NX2000 replacement, sold 10 times as many, made a lot of enthusiasts (and your stockholders) happy, but who cares when it's all about whose dick is bigger?

  • Image of weatherman weatherman at 02:19 PM on 11/26/07 *

@bobdobbs: NX2000 replacement instead of the GT-R? I think your garage needs better ventilation.

  • @jakay11: Agree, but you'll be able to -drive- the Nissan every day w/o a tow truck following close by.

(As a one-time Nissan + Porsche owner, I can say that, right?)

On the other hand, the Nissan's gone, and the Porsche stayed.

On the other-other hand, the Porsche's perpetually broken.)

  • Image of bobdobbs bobdobbs at 02:42 PM on 11/26/07 *

@weatherman: Never driven an NX2000, huh?

  • After seeing what they've done to the sentra, perhaps it's better nissan hasn't looked into an nx2000 replacement. I have a '91 and have frequently enjoyed the immense amount of stuff you can throw in the back.

  • I live in Nashville where NNA's HQ is, and I fully expect and desperately hope to see a few of these cruising the roads. I'll call in every favor I can to get some seat time in one next year. I don't know any Nissan execs yet, just some lower level folks, but that might change.

  • Image of weatherman weatherman at 06:12 PM on 11/26/07 *

    @bobdobbs: admittedly no. That's a chick car :)

  • Is anyone surprised by this? Weird Japanese exotic coming to America for the first time, but only in limited quantities?

    @AndyDuncan:

At that price, i'd do what i'd probably do anyway: save my pennies and wait for used ones to start showing up. Then i'd buy a beat one and make it into a true monster.

One significant downside of this, though, is that there are probably only going to be a few Nissan dealerships in the US who have the special gear to service these. So i guess unless you live in/near a population center you will probably have to get acquainted with technical manuals and exotic materials...

  • Is this whole GTR thing going to go like the mid nineties
Japanese super car thing did?Build a great car(rx7,supra,300zx),price it out of the reach of the middle class enthusiast, release them during sky high oil prices and fade off into irrelevance as consumers move onto the next fad(90s=SUVs,this decade hybrids.)

I would like to own a GTR but most people seem to agree that it is overpriced. Most people who idolize this car are under the age of 30.Most of my friends over 30 never played grand turismo, thought the fast and the furious was silly and like the snobbery that comes with luxury brands.I hate to say it but his car has a luke warm life ahead of it.At close to 80 grand after deal mark up I might as well go all out an get a 911,audi r8,or a gang of other cars at that price point.

I don't care what you think you would do if you had 100 grand to spend on a car;but for me and i think a whole lot of you, your gonna go entry level exotic before you go gtr.

  • I would not mine a new GTiR if we are talking about bring back more modest Nissan of the past.

  • Image of NovaloadMissesPolar NovaloadMissesPolar at 10:08 PM on 11/26/07 *

I'm seriously underwhelmed for that amount of money. I also think silver is the auto equivalent of a baggy camoflage jacket--jet black or some other color would make it look better.

  • @Rust-MyEnemy:

this is exactly what i'm talking about. a lot of people are willing to bash this or put it on the alter next to the virgin mary without really seeing...wait...experiencing this car in person.

i've seen other comments on the interwebs from people who have seen this car in person and each one has been nothing but positive. this one especially as its come from a person who wasn't a fan.

"...it looks like nuclear war." absolutely brilliant.

  • In my mind, the question that still remains to be answered is whether Nissan has the cachet to command this kind of money for a car. We are in the Porsche, AMG, BMW M, Audi RS, and Corvette Z06 territory here, and I'm not sure if the maker of Sentra has the same ring to it. As others pointed out, the GT4-playing ricer slackers who would buy this car cannot afford it, and people who can afford it might not be swayed by the dowdy brand. Hence, I wonder if the low available number is a sneak on Nissan's part to create the impression of demand (and thus a reflection of lack of confidence in a significant market for the car) and avoid the shame of having its flagship languish on dealer lots.

  • @DieterX:

"We are in...Corvette Z06 territory here,... and I'm not sure if the maker of the Sentra has the same ring to it."

Last time I checked Chevy also makes the Cobalt and both would get serviced at the same dealership.

  • ...not to mention a whole slew of other mediocre (or worse) vehicles in addition to the Cobalt.

  • I'm not a Chevy fanboy, feel free to toss the Vette, although it will compete with the GT-R for racer buyers. People seeking luxocoupes with high performance and prestige will go elsewhere.

And uh all those electronic gizmos with Nissan/Renault quality... ouch.

  • @Rust-MyEnemy: This car is ridiculously awesome in person...but I can't bring myself to pay over sticker for this when there are tons of incredible cars around this price. The Nissan dealer is going to handle this as well as the VW dealer handled the Phaeton, which is to say shabbily.

I really thought I was going to get his car. But I'm not going to get into a sticker price pissing match when there are so many great cars out there. You use the Maserati as a good example, but I thought of the Aston Martin Vantage, or the Cadillac CTS-V and a lot of change. It's just too easy to come up with good alternatives at $72k, and it only gets easier with a big markup.

  • @DieterX: Oh you're dead on about the brand, I can't believe the genuine car enthusiasts I know who are repelled by the brand, regardless of the performance. I think they're nuts, and I think that this is a great value for what it is at the list price (assuming the dealer can actually fix it, etc). I also wonder how many people who can afford this will actually step up for a Nissan.

Now I've never seen Grand Turismo, I had to be told that if I bought this car that every kid with an aftermarket tailpipe and a high deductible is going to get all crazy around it. That is a bug, not a feature.
