According to the ever-evolving pony car watchers at MustangEvolution.com, fans of the muscular Mustang are trying to figure out what Ford will offer up to keep their promise of a special ed(ition) Mustang each year until the next re-design. As we're not expecting to see the new 'stang any time before 2010, our guess and theirs is we'll be seeing...
...yet another SE from Dearborn next year for the '09 model year. Apparently the chatter is we'll potentially be seeing a Diamond-flavored special 'stang — specifically, a Mach 1 Mustang. Even more specific might be a Bond Mustang Mach 1 modeled after the "Diamonds Are Forever" Mustang. Another guess is a Boss 'stang, but the folks at ME seem pretty hard up on the D.A.F. Mach 1. We guess we'll just have to wait and see. [via Mustang Evolution]

This nonsense is why I despise Mustangs.
Mustang III!
I keep hearing rumors about the new BOSS engine being in the pipeline. But since we havent actually seen any yet, Im gonna figure that they are at least a couple years away.
Considering the current body style, Mach I would be appropriate, but only with a Super Cobra Jet motor.
Lord, please, no Eleanor edition.
I think it'll likely be the Boss. So far Ford has a couple more 60's special editions they can re-do. I hear so much griping...all the factory-produced SEs have a classic counterpart.
@rocketrodeo: The original Eleanor *was* the Mach 1 body style depic'd above.
I forget: Did Shinoda do this one, too?
I don't think a Mustang paying tribute to a scene in a Bond movie would have broad enough appeal outside the real gearhead crowd (unlike Bullitt, which is a little more recognized by the general public).
"Yeah, um, remember that 007 movie from the seventies? No, this wasn't the Roger Moore version, but the last one Connery did. Well, actually he did one more...well, anyway, there's a scene with a Mustang. It's red...one of the big ones. He goes up on two wheels..."
Too much work for the marketing department.
Do a proper SE. Fed up with them
Mustang Superleggera anyone?
*heaves*
I'm waiting for the Goldfinger Continental.
How about a special edition with fully independent rear suspension, about 400 lbs. less weight and a 5.4 L V8? You can call it the Way We Should've Built it The First Time Edition.
It's only a matter of time until they mine the Mustang II vault for its "nostalgia" potential. Charlie's Angels Edition, here we come!
@TinaChow: Goldfinger Continental? Pshaw! Oddjob Ranchero!
I'm all for it if it has a 350HP 5.4L and costs no more than 28K. But please, no bolt-on mods to a 4.6
How about FOMOCO buys the rights to the Matador and makes one of these lovely Bond-mobiles:

(and you wonder why AMC is no more)
Makes about as much sense as any of the other ideas.
The "Diamonds are Forever" edition of the Mustang. So what will it do besides having the ability to balance on two wheels entering an alley, and magically change over to the other set of wheels near the end of the alley?
@Triborough:
Even as a kid, I laughed at the obsurdity of a crushed Lincoln Continental (curb weight about 5000 lbs) being dropped into the bed of that little Falconchero, with the rear suspension barely dipping.
@Vipper Of Vipp: And of course, to keep it historically accurate, they will base it on a Focus (American of course, we just aren't getting the European one.)
@Triborough: C'mon, the Goldfinger Country Squire is where it's at - just throw a bunch of wood panelling at a Taurus X and you're set to shuttle around your enemies in style..
And Ford's going to build both the Boss and the Mach 1, a handful of Eleanors (original and remake), maybe even the D.A.F. edition (and if we're lucky, they'll find a way to make a F.A.F. edition also - I can't make sense of it, but it's gotta be done).
With regard to the Lincoln Continental in Goldfinger, the car was without an engine when crushed, you can sort of see it in the film if you look carefully, as they tried to hide it.
@JanTheMan: FTW!
"their promise of a special ed(ition) Mustang each year until the next re-design"
I thought it was each month?
@west-coaster: Also the fact that there was a bunch of gold in the trunk. WTF why not remove the gold and the mobster and just throw him in the crusher.
Wah-hoo! Gimme a Mach!
I would be interested to see what a current gen Mustang with a Turbo 4 (Done properly) would be like.... Not the balls of a V8 but nice and revvy, maybe throw in an independent rear end...
Might be fun.
No, I'm not gay.
@timrussell: Because it's a James Bond movie and that's how they roll.
Apart from the old opening sequences, the next coolest thing was the cars. Damn. I miss them.
either way it's not gonna be as original as the original.
Bring back the Maverick!
@UDMAN: Exactly! I remember seeing the flick in like second grade and after that scene turning to my buddy and asking "what the HELL was that about..." One of the great film continuity faux pas' of all time.
I hope it's the Boss, I loved those hockey stick stripes on the '70 302, but I hear that Ford no longer owns the rights to the Boss name to use on cars. The best they could do is come up with a crate engine with that name.
why don't they just call it a clydesdale and send it to the glue factory.
What about a F.A.F edition?
i mean, they have the build quality right already.
