Wolfgang Hatz, head of engine development at Audi AG recently told Italian auto mag Quattroruote he'd like to mount the company's V12 TDI diesel in a supercar like the new R8. That desire, however, will likely rest on engineers' ability to build a high-performance version that's quieter and more roadworthy than the LeMans-winning version of the TDI, with driving responses closer to its V8 gas engine counterpart. It's far from an admission such a car is in development — as had been rumored early on in the R8's gossip cycle — but it does indicate the company is at least considering amortizing its investment by putting the oil-burner more vehicles than just the Q7.
