Found this on James May's Wikipedia page. My appreciation of this man, high already, has grown in the last couple hours.


Dismissal from Autocar magazine
James May's hidden message

In an interview with Richard Allinson on BBC Radio 2,[14] May confessed that he was fired in 1992 from Autocar magazine after putting together a hidden message or acrostic in one issue. At the end of the year, the magazine's "Road Test Year Book" supplement was published. Each spread featured four reviews and each review started with a large red letter (known in typography as an initial). May's role was to put the entire supplement together, which "was extremely boring and took several months". He went on to say:

So I had this idea that if I re-edited the beginnings of all the little texts, I could make these red letters spell out a message through the magazine, which I thought was brilliant. I can't remember exactly what it said, but it was to the effect that "You might think this is a really great thing, but if you were sitting here making it up you'd realise it's a real pain in the arse". It took me about two months to do it and on the day that it came out I'd actually forgotten that I'd done it because there's a bit of a gap between it being "put to bed" and coming out on the shelves. When I arrived at work that morning everybody was looking at their shoes and I was summoned to the managing director of the company's office. The thing had come out and nobody at work had spotted what I'd done because I'd made the words work around the pages so you never saw a whole word. But all the readers had seen it and they'd written in thinking they'd won a prize or a car or something.

May's original message, punctuated appropriately, reads: "So you think it's really good, yeah? You should try making the bloody thing up. It's a real pain in the arse.

I may be visiting New York City in a few weeks and I have a few questions.

First, my factory radio is dead so I use a boombox. Now I know to hide the boombox and/or leave it at the the arpartment, but here is the actual question.

I have a plastic coated wire that is alligator clipped to the external antenna that is then snaked into the passenger compartment and attached to the boombox's antenna inside the vehicle.
Are people going to freak and call the bomb squad? Should hide the wire when not near the vehicle so people do not steal it?

I may have bungee cords holding on the rear bumper and I assume people won't freak over this. Am I wrong?

So what are the best stations for the following music in NYC?
Country
Hip Hop/Rap
Classic Rock
Blue Grass
Korn, Marylin Manson, System of a Down, etc.
Alternative music
Feel free to throw out other suggestions.
1010 WINS is a great station.

Would it be better to drive from The Bronx to Lower Manhattan on a Saturday or take the 1 & 9?

The 7 stars are for the 7 Astronauts who died when the Columbia broke up. The U.S Flag is neat when done correctly. The Space Shuttle represents Texas' role in the Space Race. The Moon and stars represent the beautiful sky in Texas. The Yucca represents local plant life and the Oil Derricks represent part of Texas's economy and history. The cowpoke is also part of history and the Texas flag is a must.

The current plate is the Davis Mountain in (West?) Texas and is a poor replacement for the current issue. Too bad it is a forced replate. Are you allowed to keep your previous number when you get new plates? I met someone who got all new plates in July 2009 just to avoid the current issue until 2016 or 2017.

Texas usually does not let its citizens vote on new license plates and it is a pity the people chose this design. Wish it was embossed since that is my other main gripe. Reply
