Here's a toy great for the amateur spy photographer or for the middle-aged gold digger needing to protect her Hummer. It's the CarCam Voyager from Brick House Security. (Disclaimer: Jalopnik does not advocate taking your eyes off the road unless it is to take good spy photos for us.)
The CarCam Voyager is an $80 camera capable of recording upwards of eight hours of video on a single 2 GB memory card. The CarCam Voyager's roughly the size of a cellphone and runs off a couple of carAAA batteries or a 12V DC power outlet. The fact that the camera is dash mounted could provide plenty of opportunity for different kinds of video. You know, of the hoon or NSFW variety (dragons need not apply). Cant wait to see what video gold comes out from these.
Can I trigger it when the car door gets slammed into by some 8-year old?
Or parents could his this as an end-all to the "where-have-you-been" questions.
Gee for a second I thought that title said CarCam Voyeur!
If it were for dragons, wouldn't it be pointing the other way?
I'm sure some auteur will film Fassbinder-like hours of commuting, vacation driving, roads to nowhere, poignant road signs, roadside attractions...
I could see where this little guy might be useful.
Definitely useful to record all your driving in case of an accident where the other driver is at fault and blames you and lies to the police officer. It happened to me once.
8 hours onto 2 gigs? You do want to be able to make out what is a car and what is a house on the video, right?
I cannot stress how bad video quality will be, if 8 hours fits into 2 gigs... Especially for an $80 camera.
@TexanIdiot25: Yeah, at that sort of resolution the video would be like a more colorful version of "Secret Collect."
@MrEvil: yeah, i've always thought something like this could work well with the black-box system on some newer cars... of course, if the accident is your fault, it's not going to be helpful at all...
@smokyburnout: That's when the delete button is your friend.
this does seem to be something i'd be interested.... if i hadn't already invested in a mini gorillapod... that thing is wonderful... just stick my decent res. camera on there and go have fun.. if only i hadn't had to replace the camera due to a 'bit too much fun' that ended in the whole thing breaking and losing the best videos :(
lesson learned: back yo shit up!
now, i don't have that car any more... and my current one isn't capable of replicating that kind of hoonage
I wonder what the quality really is. I was rear-ended and pushed into another car. No witnesses and the guy in front of me said he was hit twice so I was assigned 50% fault by the cops. This would have been great. Watch what you say to cops or anyone else when your in an accident.
