Saab "Turbo X" To Be Revealed in Frankfurt

It's 30 years since Saab unveiled its first turbocharged model, causing young stockbrokers to rear their heads like hungry cocker spaniels at the shake of a kibble bag. Now, Saab says its planning to reveal a car that will evoke the classic "black turbo" models that followed throughout the 1980s. It's called the Turbo X, and we suspect it's an attempt to recapture some of the brand's, er, Saabness lost during the GM years. The Turbo X will be a limited-edition model the company says will introduce cutting-edge technology. We're hoping that doesn't just mean a stock ticker on the dash.

Saab Black Turbo Rebjörn

• Saab unveils the Turbo X
• Celebration of 30 years at the forefront of turbocharging technology
• Saab to replicate classic Black Turbo models, available as a limited edition

Saab will go 'back to the future' at next month's Frankfurt International Motor Show by evoking the iconic appeal of its classic 'Black Turbo' models.

The Swedish premium car maker will celebrate 30 years of leadership in turbocharging by unveiling the Saab Turbo X, a limited edition performance car that inherits the visual appeal of the Saab 99 and 900 black turbos - while also introducing cutting-edge technology. This ultimate expression of the new 9-3 range will deliver standard-setting levels of performance for the brand.

It was at Frankfurt in 1977 that Saab surprised the automotive world when it revealed its first turbocharged model. It set a performance trend that others were to follow. Now the innovative features of the new Saab 'Black Turbo' are also expected to attract widespread imitation.

Further details of the Saab Turbo X will be revealed at the Frankfurt Motor Show.

  • If you're just teasing me with that hatchback I'll keep my 25th anniversary (of the turbo) with its fancy leather/cloth turbo embossed seats.

  • Rumors have claimed that this car will have in excess of 300 hp...and others have claimed the car is a new 9-3 Aero (280 hp) with a body kit. We will see.

  • Bring back the hatchback!

This is appeasement for leaving the Aero X on the concept stand.

  • @brandegee:
    and the Sonnet

    hopefully its atleast a coupe

  • Saab worked on a coupe 9-3 based on the 9-3 convertable but eventually decided sales of coupes were on the slide so didn't go ahead with it. The Turbo X will be 4 wheel drive version of the newly revised 9-3 with a more powerful (Holden-based) V6 intended to compete with the likes of the Audi S4. I'd say good luck with that

  • A new 900 turbo would make me happy.

  • Boo, the engine still goes the wrong way... AWD V6 is not going to the roots of Saabism. Brick back the north-south, ass-backwards layout & 15 minute clutch jobs!

  • its a fine idea to have another new car put out on the market, but i could think of one more that would break the bank at far less the cost of the car.
how about supplying a brand new 2.0 motor for the classic 900.
or perhaps just for my 88 spg. :)

  • My car looks exactly like the one in the back.

I've outrun brand-new 9-3 Aeros in it (and yes, I do mean the back-assward V6 9-3.) V6 engines are supposed to be for the larger model (9000, 9-5, etc.), not the small-end one. What Saab needs now is a new 900, and a new 90, because the 90 (anyone remember it?) was a great small car.

    TurboBrick: I agree wholeheartedly.

  • Saab is like fat Elvis, a sad caricature of its former self.

  • The X is the interesting bit. GM has a new 'cross-wheel drive' on-demand four-wheel drive system coming... Prototype drives suggest it's pretty decent, too...

  • @CBR2200:
    Sad but true!

Methinks that GM should not get all the blame, because Saab was on the verge of bankruptcy before GM swooped in. However, GM isn't doing Saab any favors by trying to pretend versions of the 9-3 or 9-5 are high-performance sports cars. Saabs never were and never should be marketed in the same league as the RWD autobahn burners. For one thing, 300 HP delivered to the front wheels only sounds ludicrous to me.

Forgive me for using the B-word, but this is what Saab has always represented. Saab is the European equivalent of Buick: not the flashiest, not the mostest by any measure, but super comfortable and well-built; a tremendous value. And yes, Buick had quite a few sleepers: the Grand National was an impressive beast, as this Aero X may be. The high-value, middle-of-the-road formula works as long as another company doesn't undercut your prices (as Toyota and Honda have been successfully able to do to Buick in North America). This traditional value selling proposition and a bit more refinement (again, Buick and Saab were abandoned for years while GM spent all its attention building bigger trucks for the last decade) would serve Saab well.

But still, GM, stop trying to pass off high-HP FWD cars as competitors to RWD and AWD German sports sedans. You'll never win a market attempting that. Go back to Saab's roots and offer the efficient, stylish, well-built, versatile vehicles that Saabs used to be, at better prices.

The return of vehicles like the 90, the 900 hatchback, and the Sonnet would be a good renaissance for Saab. And an AWD Aero-X, that'd be fine too!

  • Hate to say it, but my Saabaru has more Saab specific funkiness than anything to officially come from Trolhatten in many moons.

  • @my favorite car is a motorcycle: I like you, your funny and have a nice pool of brain activity. However before you judge something you should know what you're judging and in this case your way out swimming with giant tortoises.

This is not, and I say it again, is not, an attempt to be an S4/335i. If that had been the case the series wouldn't have been limited to 2000 vehicles. It's simply a way of introducing the new, and fucking unbelievably cool, Haldex XWD and at the same time make some extra money by launching it with a special and tempting version.

Saab needs more money, and this is a excellent way to make that happen; and for those who's in doubty-doubt, wait for this Turbo X and the upcomming 9-5 - Saab will live again!

Read about the XWD -> [www.haldex-xwd.com]...

  • @Mike Spinelli: And how dare you not to include the information about XWD..?

The Turbo X will also include the neat eLSD from scratch which, later on, will be an option for the other cars. The eLSD is an rear active electronic differential that enables variable power outtage on the rear wheels which you'll usuallly only see on cars like the F430 or the Veyron.

  • I bet it will have some kind of variable compression set up to take advantage of E-85's crazy octane numbers and standard gas.

Saab built engines like this back in the day, and for the last 10 or so years they've been messing around with similar tech.

  • Variable Compression.
