They rolled out more vendor carts at this non-presse day of the big show. At last we found what we think was a frankfurter. For a mere three euros we scored Paar Würstchen mit senf und Brötchen or what was also listed on the menu as Frankfurter Art. One pair sausages, Frankfurt style - with roll. The mustard was applied mit dispenser. No ketchup was poured.

Gott!
Good for you. A blogger-journalist of lesser character may have slathered ketchup all over that linked goodness.
That's a distinctly non-German-looking senf. The Heinzening of the world continues!
Or is it the Plochmanning? I'm not sure which.
What's the blue thing?
As Dave Barry is wont to say, you stop putting ketchup on hot dogs when you're about 11.
Three Euros? That's about, what, $4.25 US? About the same at the auto shows here. Gouging is gouging is gouging. Looks good, though and at least you get two.......... How much for ein bier?
But did "Maximum Bob" Lutz call it a "steak sandwich"?

Typical great double post. Must be schadenfreude Thursday for me. This and that damn F1 thing! Mein Gott!
Sieg ist ihr!!
I actually like a combination of mustard and ketchup best...
Frankenbagel.
And I think it was Mike Royko who said the thing about ketchup...at least that's where I learned it a long damn time ago.
It would appear German hot-dog bun technology is seriously behind North America.
Proper hot dog:
Poppyseed bun
Steamed, all-beef dog
mustard
onion
sweet relish
dill pickle spear
sliced tomato
sport peppers
celery salt
End of motherfucking story.
For anyone in Frankfurt, you have to ask around for two restaurants. Ask where you can get the drückshuvel or something like that, it's basically a giant metal shovel full of pork and meat and veggies. Awesome.
The other place serves "steak on a rock". Try it out. Amazing. Comes to you rare on a slab of granite, and you slice it off and cook it on the granite as long as you like.
And look for the secret "X-men" trap door on the grounds outside of the Auto show. Can't miss it.
@benztown: Philistine
Oh, it's a fork...
Hell yeah! That's what I'm talking about!
@PeteJäyhawk™: You gotta be from Chicago - I, myself, am from the WTF state.
@drjeffie:
Don't forget the Vienna Beef at the heart of it all.
Gotta have the best wurst*, y'know.
(*along with the bratwust sold at the trackside concession stands at Road America at Elkhart Lake, Wisconsin.)
For those keeping score, original Frankfurters are made near Frankfurt while those in the Frankfurt style are made elsewhere. In any case, they are made from 100% smoked pork. Germans are nothing of not sticklers for obscure medieval food & drink regulations. Just ask any German you run into about the Reinheitsgebot of 1516 if you want an earful.
By contrast, Wiener (Vienna sausages) are made with up to 30% beef and less smoke. Either way, mustard is the condiment of choice for anyone over the age of, like, 5.
@ Benztown: philistine indeed. You probably think Wiener Schnitzel comes on a schtick!
@ Avarno: that would be Dreckschaufel and Felsensteak, respectively. You can also order a sandwich called Strammer Max, but make sure its on the menu or you make get dirty looks :-x
Hey, I'm German, so if anyone is allowed to fiddle with tradition, it's me ;)
It might be heresy, but it just tastes good, so I don't care.
In any case, I prefer Leberkäs to sausages, but you have to go further south than Frankfurt to get that. If you ever get to south Germany (e.g. when you pick up your new Porsche/Mercedes/Audi/BMW), go to a butcher and order a Leberkäs-Wecken (Swabia) or a Leberkäs-Semmel (Bavaria). You surly won't regret it...
That is one highly precise sandwich...
I like the Polish dogs I get at Costco (++kraut and 'deli' mustard), but I rather doubt a Pole would be impressed.
Ketchup? On a dog? Ewwwww.
