We might tend to think of Windsor, Ontario, as the home of the Ford 351 Windsor engine, but it's also home to a fine example of the British answer to the Pinzgauer. Eagle-eyed reader Schweppes spotted this Land Rover 101 Forward Control being used as an advertising platform at the University of Windsor, and had the presence of mind to produce camera and proceed with the snapping. Make the jump to hear Schweppes' take on this highly practical urban commuter and view the gallery...
I thought you might find these photos interesting - Landrover's take on a vehicle similar to the Pinzgauer and Unimog that you've already posted. You don't see many older Landrovers around in Ontario, and this is the first time I've seen a 101 Forward Control.
I found this truck parked near the University of Windsor's campus being used as a mobile billboard. It's sort of a sad end for a military truck, and I hope that it finds its way off road at least occasionally (maybe the owner is trying to justify writing it off as a business expense?). The street that the Landrover is parked on is a controlled parking zone and is surrounded by student housing, so the truck's owner likely owns one or more rental properties in the area and is using a parking permit assigned to one of them.
Here's the requisite wikipedia link and another article on the 101.
Thanks, Schweppes!

He's our army reserve. Hey they gotta work too.
Silly Canadians - they spelled Center wrong on the Education building.
It seems that if it was merely a billboard it would be painted white, or something louder.
Ehh... I prefer Volvo 303's. And this is coming from the owner of a '92 Range Rover!
Thank you, Murilee and Schweppes, for satisfying my hunger for all things forward-control.
I used to know somebody with a 101 F/C which had had a wankel rotary conversion.
Pervert.
My Dad's a Land Rover fanatic so I've wanted one of these for years. Red necks should note the correct position of the gun rack, on the "dash" in front of the passenger. Much more convenient location than on the rear window. American hicks ain't got nothing on Canadian hicks.
Awesome.
Too bad it's a billboard, but it's still a great truck.
Forward Control? Is this a rebadged Peel 5000, featuring no reverse gear? Tally-ho chaps, last one pushing the daisies is a rhubarb omlette!
@PeteJayhawk: It's actually nice to see that the Canucks can speak the Queen's English properly.
@Rust-MyEnemy: That's sick. Aren't rotary engines woefully devoid of torque? What's the point of that?
That's awesome!!!!!!!! I love military vehicles, so utilitarian.
@PeteJayhawk Must use the Lumberjack's alphabet!
I once drove aforeard control landie from Oxford to Morroco. Quite an adventure. And it was purple.
@Euromobile: No point whatsoever. He had a junk RX7 and an ailing LR 2.25, and used the Landie as a daily driver, never going off road, plus he liked a good drink, that may be where the idea came from.
Piss poor acceleration, but it could cruise at 80 and sounded awesome. 12MPG, also.
@Rust-MyEnemy: I see. 80 in a 101 FC must have been an experience!
FCs of any flavo(u)r rock.
@Euromobile: Yes. Terrifying. Haven't seen it, or him, in 3 years... hope it still exsists.
I saw one of these in Stroud Gloucestershire years ago that had been made into a milk float (milk truck, to our revolted cousins, I assume).
Hurray, I've been published on the internet! Time to go out and find another neat car.
I think that my favourite feature is the dashboard mount for the brake fluid and clutch fluid reservoirs - who needs gauges when you can top up while you're driving...
@schweppes: Are you a Windsor student? I went there a couple years ago, just never finished. Used to live right around the corner from the campus too, so, yeah, I dig?
And FC Land Rovers are almost as badass as FC Jeeps. If I still went there, that'd be a pretty damn persuasive ad for whatever housing that is (although Lancer housing suggests it's somehow tied into the university).
@Maymar: Yes, I'm an Engineering student at Windsor. The Land Rover was parked on California Ave. by the Toldo building, right next to where the new medical building is going up (hence the construction worker in the background).
I don't think the rental company is tied to the University, I hadn't bothered to look at their website earlier but it doesn't indicate any link to the University and my guess is that they're just using a similar name to imply a connection. A quick look at their rental pricing, and with 6 tenants they're paying around $50 a month each more than I do in a decent house with 3 people.
w00t! for the Hometown!
@schweppes: I have friends at the U of W, and I used to go there...to drink.

Speaking of Anthony P Toldo, I used to work for his company, making steering wheels for Minivans, our local crop.
@Schweppes: Are you working on FSAE at all?? I know a few guys on that team.
@danio3834: I haven't been involved with FSAE, I did my capstone project at the GM engine plant instead. I used to know a couple of the mechanicals on the team, but haven't really been keeping track of their progress.
I suppose this means there are enough people in the area (not too surprising) that a Jalopnik meet up at the Detroit Auto show would be worthwhile?
@schweppes: It looks that way. Between Windsor/Detroit, we may have Jalop's 2nd largest demographic by area.
