Earlier this year at the Detroit show, we eyeballed a snow-white SUV prototype whose purity-implying paint scheme belied the sooty oil burner hidden within. Admittedly, the metaphor of that Audi Q7 concept stretches thin, considering the Audi V12 TDI under the hood is far less emmisive than diesel-fired smokers of the past, and potent enough for Audi's Le Mans racers (in racing trim, natch). Back then, Audi reps stood mute on the subject of release date, satisfied enough with dropping the hint and moving on. But as Dutch auto mag Autotelegraaf reports, the twelve-banger Q7 is on the European docket for the second half of 2008 as a 2009 model. It won't have the full Le Mans monte, but will likely get the concept's 500 horsepower and 738 lb-ft of torque, giving it the potential to become the most exciting new vehicle in years, and a fitting amuse bouche hinting at a sumptuous main course. That is, yet-unconfirmed Audi R8 V12 TDI. We've got one word for ya, kid. Oil. [Autotelegraaf via The German Car Blog]

mmmmm. so. much. TORQUE!
and sooooo UGLY! This one must weigh in at over 3 tons with the diesel...
Edgett: It's a racing bred diesel, I wouldn't count on it weighing in at the 1,000+ lbs that it would take to get the Q7 up over the 3 ton mark.
Plus...738ft/lb! I mean come ON man, if you're going to drive a diesel anything, drive one that MEANS it.
so, think we could shoe-horn that V12 into an RS4?
Put this motor into a car not a stupid SUV!
AUDI is putting the V12 TDI into production: OMG!
AUDI is putting it in the Q7 and not the R8: WTF?
Personally, I love the way the Q7 looks. And LemursGT is right, this diesel is one mean mother. I think Audi is probably testing the waters for s super high performance diesel before shoehorning this monster into othe rcars. I think the S5 will be the next beneficiary, not the R8, as the R8 already has 2 engine choices.
They should just put out a retro Type-C to celebrate that engine. Or a crazy mid-engine RSRSS6 Avant(whatever it would be called at that point) like VW did with that W12 GTI Golf concept.
@edgett: I suppose you would say the same thing about the LM002.
All vehicles are ugly unless they are actually used as intended.
@Fitty7lax:
True - not likely in the R8. Dollars to donuts this motor will become a mill option for the R10, though.
