At a super-secret special test drive preview for the Korean media, Hyundai Motor Co. unveiled the sports sedan Genesis a full month prior to what was supposed to be the "official" unveil at the Detroit Auto Show and a full month after they showed off the coupe concept version at the LA Auto Show. The car features a rear wheel drive architecture and the new Tau V8 engine which will deliver 375 horsepower to the rear wheels through a six-speed automatic transmission. Hyundai's V6 Lambda engines will also be offered in 3.3- and 3.8-liter editions.
Hyundai officials told members of the media to expect the cheapest version of the Genesis will cost just under $30,000 and top out at just under $40,000 and that Lexus is the target they're gunning for. Although we're assuming this Genesis will be the Asia-spec version of the up-market sedan for the Korean and Chinese markets, with the North American one to be introduced in January, we've got no evidence either way to tell us that this isn't the same vehicle, flair and all, that we'll be seeing next month in Detroit.

It sounds quite nice but for $40k it is a plain Jane. Props for the RWD but would it have killed them to make it a little stylish? It's so neutral it's almost invisible. And again with the silver.
Agreed, the styling is so derivative it honestly reminds me of one of those Chinese clone cars.
Aftermarket Lexus badging will help many owners deal with the somewhat generic looks.
GENESIS:- [jen-uh-sis]
1) - A Supero Ultera Mega Law Suit waiting to happen from the Supero Number One Best Ruxery Automaker, Rexus, or;
2) - Mercedes, Law suit, Yaah, we do the German Daunce on your head for you, yaah.
This could also be the start of a new high end Luxury Mark by Hyundai, similar to what Toyota did with Lexus. I don;t think it's going to be the Hyundai Genesis, I think this will be the Genesis L330, or L380, or L420 or what even, and the Coupe will be the Genesis C380 or whatever alphanumeric designation they dream up. And yea, what's with the silver?
@UDMAN: Crap, typing is so under rated.... don;t = don't, even = ever, UDMan = worst typing skills ever!
Would it hurt Hyundai to come up with something original for once?
Aside from the hood bulges nothing unique about the styling. Then again, Hyundai's done worse by being different (old Santa Fe, new Elantra)
Lexus shouldn't be too upset at being cribbed...they got their start by aping Mercedes.
looks like the last gen S Class grafted with a LS grille
is that bad?
@UDMAN: Lyk excuz me but thatz lyk worst typing 'skillz evar'!
...and they should use a letter that's never been done before like U330 or Y380 or P420, just to make something about it stand out.
and why the Chaplin stache in the middle of the grille? I hope the got the brains to put the flying H on it when it comes stateside
I like the Genesis. Am I officially an old fart now? It reminds me of a Toyota Avalon (near $40K), but with RWD and an extra 100 HP. Plus, it's invisible.
I'm not sure how to read the hype on Hyudai's RWD platform. RWD=good. HP=good. Styling=horrible. Hyundai badge="Mark of Shame?"
I know the Sonata and Veracruz were well received by some, but is the Genesis (in sedan or coupe form) just going to be a big, heavy, softly suspended wannabe?
@rkwadd: As someone who's loved Crown Victorias since I was a kid, I welcome our Korean overlords and their big heavy mushmobile (with the ever-important RWD and V8) for the 21rst Century.
And I thought Lincoln and Jaguar had identity and kitbashing issues.
Where's the, you know, Hyundai LOGO? Or is this their Aurora?
Benz, called they said they only lent you the Mercedes to pick up your grand mother. Time to give it back Hyundai.
Bland, derivative looks, RWD, V8, $40k = 1990 Lexus LS 400. If this were to affect the comparatively underpowered, V6 FWD ES350, it's karma.
While CAFE rules are being updated, Congress needs to pass a 15% tax on any car sold in silver.
Kudos to Hyundai for a legitimate try upmarket, but are you sure these pictures are not of the new Lexiniti LG 450.
If that first picture shows maximum body roll, the car has a chance. If that's just a gentle turn, well, that would be unfortunate
Crap, I had assumed that the car would be "well equipped" for around $30k. You're telling us it starts at $30k for the 3.3 liter V6?
Hail no. Pontiac G8 GT FTW.
This is the frickin' most hilarious car comment string ever! Thank you Hyundai! That's about the biggest accolade this regurgitated 2001 Acura TL-? is ever gonna get. I agree about the silver, let's bring gold back.
It might even end up being a good car, but it'll tank just because it's a Hyundai priced well over $30k.
I cannot believe that this string has gone this far without the mention of the flying vagina styling of the grill work and badge location.
Whoa! Bad. Bad. Bad.
I'm excited about this car, but jesus, there's way to much visible window and cabin there. looks like a bubble top car. It's like they can't make a car without seriously f'ing up something major.
Hyundai to Lexus...thank you for the front end. Hyundai to Infiniti...thank you for the ass.
@jdepould: Personally I think it more closely resembles the Acura RL but whose nit picking.
overall, i like it. good for hyundai; they've come a long way. never hurts to have more choices out there.
It looks ok, Lexus LS cough, MB W220 cough cough Acura RL, cough cough a vagina on the grille cough cough.
Sorry ive got a bit of a cold
@dirac: That's exactly what I thought when I saw the picture. Overall it looks like the RL with some MBenz details thrown into the mix.
Genesis does...Genesis does what Nintendont.
All the auto manufacturers mimic each others designs, take the previous generation of midsize japanese cars. Hyundai created a simple and elegant designed car with a powerful V8. People...this is a big deal. I wonder if the V8 has a variable displacement feature.
