Honda released a sketch today of the next-generation Jeep Honda Pilot, which will make an appearance at the Detroit Auto Show in January. Look familiar? The thick pillars, grille angle, headlight shape and beefy fenders all are hallmarks of Jeep products, especially the Grand Cherokee and Patriot. Is it just us, or are we living in a world where Hondas are starting to look like Jeeps and Jeeps are starting to look like Hondas? The Pilot has been a popular choice for those wanting third-row seating and decent fuel economy. High resolution image and press release below:
Prototype Honda Pilot Headed to North American International Auto Show
2/12/2007 - TORRANCE, Calif. -
A prototype of the next-generation Honda Pilot will be unveiled at the January 2008 North American International Auto Show (NAIAS) in Detroit, American Honda Motor Co., Inc., announced today.
The prototype will convey design features of the more boldly-styled, next-generation Pilot and will emphasize authentic SUV styling, clever interior packaging and advanced technologies for safety, fuel efficiency and convenience.
The current-generation Pilot offers versatile eight-passenger seating and all-weather, medium-duty off-road capabilities while earning a distinctive reputation in the midsize SUV class for its refined handling and ride comfort. Among its numerous accolades, the Honda Pilot has earned Car and Driver magazine's prestigious "5Best Truck" award for six straight years (2002 thru 2007).
Additional Honda vehicles to be on display at NAIAS include the FCX Clarity hydrogen fuel cell vehicle, introduced at the 2007 Los Angeles Auto Show, and the CR-Z concept vehicle, introduced at the 40th Tokyo Motor Show. Limited retail marketing of the FCX Clarity will begin in summer 2008. The CR-Z is a next-generation lightweight sports car concept equipped with Honda's original gas-electric hybrid system. It's the new Hondeep Grand Pilotkee!
@POLAR: Are you sure it isn't the Jeepa Cherilot? No, wait. Your's is much funnier.
More like Hondord Expilotor
Maybe we just live in a world where every car is starting to look like every other car, regardless of make or model.
I generally don't buy the "insults" slung about how one car has a taillight that looks like this others, only upside down. But, this thing flat out looks like a Grand Cherokee.
This would be a huge improvement over the current pilot though.
Looks more land rover-ish honestly.
@rlj676: Some of the "insults" could be considered "compliments" depending on the brand. And as for the current Pilot, they sell so few of these you'd hardly know they still produce them!
@POLAR:
I guess I usually assume they're insults.
When will Honda just give up on their "trucks"?
Except the CRV, are the rest even worth the trouble? (I don't like the CRV, but it at least sells in volume)
@rlj676: In my observations, I find the Japanese based car companies are reluctant to give up on their products. Honda does have remarkably well built trucklets, but they are of a required taste. All three are a little hard on the eyes for my taste.
Yeah, it's a Nitro eroded by Ghibli.
@POLAR: Yes they require you to have taste, but they are an acquired taste. Of course the taste you are required to have does not have to be good.
Yawn.
@POLAR: I see Pilots all the time around here.
Wow. And here I was thinking they'd simply copied Scion with the chop-top, rounded off box for V2.0.
@POLAR:
Well, they gave up on the Accord Hybrid, while continuing to make the Pilot? That is just odd to me.
@RalphieDC:
Are you insinuating the Element or Ridgeline aren't things of beauty, in line with the Vantage V12 RS post below?
BTW- What happened to the post preview that used to appear when typing? I kinda liked that...
@FreeMan:
Me too.
Can we petition Jalopnik with prayer?
I dunno .... I just can seem to say "Honda" and "truck" in the same phrase without busting out laughing.
@FreeMan:
Include me as well ...... as witnessed by the poor spelling in my previous post.
@RalphieDC: Like you said, buddy!
@LTDScott: Living near an airport doesn't count!
@rlj676: A wise man never says never! Hey, wait a minute...
I always thought the Honda Pilot was some kind of rail-buggy type thing....
I want one of those, not yet another Sucky Utility Vehicle
Might have something to do with domestic makers hiring asian designers and asian designers going the other way.
I see a lot of the current Pilot on north suburban Indianapolis streets, mostly driven by women. The Pilot and Freestyles/Taurus X's seem to have replaced Explorers as the mom vehicle of choice around here. Comparable 2008 Taurus X's emit fewer pollutants, less carbon, get better mileage and have better safety ratings. Me thinks it must be the SUV like look; high boxy style and the Honda reputation halo that sells more of these big'uns.
(P.S. Is it me or do Edmunds daht cahm vehicle reviews seem to take forever to load?)
