Although we shouldn't expect to see the BMW X1 mini-SUV stateside anytime before 2011, it looks like the folks at Bayerische Motoren Werke are working hard to make a 2010 reveal for Europe a reality. Based on the new 1 Series, but taller and stockier, the new mini SAV from BMW size-wise is supposed to be comparable to Toyota's RAV4 - and will actually be sharing components (and possibly some cladding) with Mini's new off-roader ( yes, the same one we talked about yesterday ). The X1 will supposedly arrive with full-time four-wheel drive and we're assuming with all the normal BMW bells-and-whistles. Full spy report from Brenda Priddy below the jump.
First Sighting: BMW X1Yes, I know: You've seen this car before, but someone else called it an X3. Well, our brazen shooters got up-close with these mini "off-roaders" and verified that this is NO X3! It's WAY too small! And, in fact, this is actually the first running prototype of the upcoming X1 - a small "sport activity vehicle" (SAV) from the folks at BMW.

Didn't GM get into a hole with too many models?
Mini-mini-SUV from BMW? DO NOT WANT!
BMW's new Caliber! It's anything but cute!
Oh BMW. You used to make the Ultimate Driving Machine.
Funny juxtaposition.
For the same price, mpg, and interior volume wouldn't you rather have the WRX STI in the banner? (Which is arguably the Ultimate Driving Machine).
Meh.
@Mad_Science: I think Subaru has come up with the most effective ad this site has yet seen - largely because it looks so good compared to all these ill-advised new vehicles seen in Spy Photos.
Dont't tell me BMW has hired Sandy Wong as an advisor and he's had them fashion a rectal stimulating trailer hitch attachment and place over 40 pleasure orifices throughout the body design.
Xzero
Those flared arches on the STI are absolutely ridiculous. If I'm honest I would have gone with 1980's style rubber wheelarch extensions (which would be in keeping with the 80s ness of the rest of it.)
I don't give a fuck about the X1, but thanks anyway.
ok BMW we get it ..you are an independent car company that can make as many ugly cars as you want when you want and how you want but the sad thing is we dont want em
Okay, that's it, BMW's officially jumped the shark. I better start stocking up on low-mile examples of the first three M3s so I have something I'll want to drive for the rest of my life.
I'm so happy to know I'm not the only one who finds all these new models so ridiculous!
Where's the Bimmer of the mid 80s? Heck, even the Bimmer of the mid 90s was so much better that the crap we're getting here in the late 00s (naughties). Sigh...
Fugly. Period.
Dear above commenters, you do realize that this is a spy shot, with HEAVY disguise... There is probably not a single piece of exterior sheet metal that you will see in a finished product. This cars sole purpose in life is to give the engineers an idea of how it all works, how well it handles and so on. So stop this stupid an in this case just plain pointless BMW bashing an go drive on in your exiting Toyotas and Subarus...
@jalopnikbannedmeandidontknowwhythestupidbitches:
Yeah, we know it's a mule. The point is, the world doesn't need yet another crossover.
We want cars that are cars. BMW used to be really good at making awesome driver's cars. The whole X series of crossovers and V series of WTFs are answers to questions nobody asked.
...and I would go back to driving my Subaru, but I took the Jeep today.
Please go back to commenting on youTube videos.
@jalopnikbannedmeandidontknowwhythestupidbitches: I think I know why.
@jalopnikbannedmeandidontknowwhythestupidbitches: Are you allowed on the internet during detention?
@jalopnikbannedmeandidontknowwhythestupidbitches: How did we miss the commenter execution on this guy?
Do we get to vote on which commenter gets executed? Cool, I must have missed that part...
@jalopnikbannedmeandidontknowwhythestupidbitches: Are you the guy that was on YouTube explaining the protective coverings for the car?
Can when have a question of the day to guess who you were in your past life?
"Dear above commenters, you do realize that this is a spy shot, with HEAVY disguise..."
Bangle still works at BMW, right? What makes you think he *wouldn't* ship that?
@jalopnikbannedmeandidontknowwhythestupidbitches:
yes my opinion is still the same
i can't believe BMW stole the Malibu Maxx from Chevy.
Ugh, not another X series. Man I hate those. Ah well, my next BMW will probably be an E36 M3 anyway.
Called it!
Sure this isn't the X3? Looks exactly like the earlier past spy shots of it.
