New York Auto Show: 1:00 — Ford Shelby Cobra GT500

Amid what may have been the most bass wattage ever to shake the asses of hundreds of auto-show spectators, Ford rolled out its new SVT-tuned Mustang, which will have the stamp of approval (as well as the brand) of Carroll Shelby. The new Shelby Cobra GT500 Mustang, to be introduced in 2006, will be the first Mustang bearing the Shelby name since 1970.

The SVT-tuned pony car concept sports a 5.4-liter, supercharged, 32-valve V-8, producing more than 450hp, and 450ft/lb. of torque, making it the most powerful factory Mustang engine ever, according to SVT chief Hau Thai-Tang. It also wears a set of 19- x 9.5-inch aluminum split-five-spoke wheels, covered by P255/45ZR19 high-performance tires, and uses 14-inch cross-drilled Brembo front brake rotors for stopping. The price? Dunno yet, but Thai-Tang says it will come in no pricier than the previous generation SVT Cobra Mustang (around $34,750) — an price-to-performance ratio that looks to be unbeatable.
