Hindenberg Anyone? GM Offers Free Fuel-Cell Cars to Consumers

equinoxfcell.jpgOnce again taking the free sample approach, the company that killed the electric car has decided to give 1,000 drivers the chance to drive the hydrogen-powered Equinox SUV's for three months. The company will also offer free hydrogen services (because who has hydrogen lying around the house?). The catch, other than having to be a guinea pig for GM researchers, you have to live in suburban LA, New York or Washington, D.C. to be a part of the program. You'll also probably have to sign a form that says you won't sue if the truck explodes. Go here to see if you're eligible. [Conde Nast Traveler]

  • cool beans. lets see if i get a free car. hope i dont explode

  • I'm pretty sure SOMEONE built a hydrogen fueling station just south of Orlando FL a couple of years ago.It looks like a very modern gas station, with a big warehouse behind the store, and huge vertical tanks that are obviously for gas, not liquid.
No pumps were installed. The store wasn't finished, and it still sits, never used.
Or maybe its a chemical storage facility for the MIB.

  • Blah--I'm not eligible, although I'm not sure why.

"won't sue if the truck explodes..."
--what about your heirs? Can they sue?
--and people say the Pinto didn't change things!

  • hmmm, I'd love to get a tow vehicle and free commuter car... that leaves plenty of time for my own personal Project Car From Hell... rebuilding a 1986 Porsche 944 Turbo Cup car, hmmm sourcing non-cracked magnesium racing wheels... 4" exhaust only available in Canada (or Europe) :)
And if the I still can't get the electrical right, I'll rip it all out and put some 'ricer' computer to speak Japanese to the German motor (yeah! that will work GREAT!)

...and then when GM takes the cars back, there will be clusters of anti GM propaganda films made demonizing them for killing the Hydrogen car because they bowed to big oil and hate the environment and steal candy from babies.

  • @danio3834: And they are feeding that frenzy by not putting the cars in the midwest. Just putting cars in NYC, DC, and Southern California is just going to create add fire to the pissed off environmental freaks who are mad over the EV-1. Put this car in Columbus, OH, Indianapolis, IN and Omaha, NE. Those are the people who need to be sold on the technology.

Youre right, more people need to be sold on the technology, but this is a PR move more than a research project. Hydrogen cars are the Turbine cars of today.

@cgarison: I've heard of those cities, but I usually fly over them on my trips to the West Coast and back.

  • @danio3834: when they run these through the crusher, will those partially filled hydrogen tanks explode all pretty like?

  • @danio3834: And we all know how popular turbine cars turned out to be.
@FreeMan: Hey! I saw Jesse James do that on Monster Garage!
