Experience The Sheer Brilliance Of The Talking Datsun 810 Maxima!

Last week Zac gave us a great look at new car features that are destined to get tired pretty quickly. Obviously, this is not the first time this has happened — car companies have a tendency to throw every new technology against the wall to see what sticks.

Let's flash back to 1981, where the Datsun 810 Maxima makes this pretty apparent. It freaking talks to you, man! This was the first ever car with a tiny, shock-resistant phonograph record player built in that issued various vocal warnings about what the car was up to.

Don't know if you left the door open? No worries, the Datsun is here to let you know. It was a very clever and innovative idea for its time.

I have never owned an 810 Maxima (later called just "Nissan Maxima") or the 280ZX, which had the same system, but I'm going to go ahead and guess that it got old really fast. After all, talking cars didn't catch on, did they? Oh well, even if you weren't a fan of the car's voice, you still got a good-looking Japanese luxury car with rear-wheel-drive and a straight-six engine. Not a bad combo at all if you ask me.
