This wallpaper has a lot of backstory, and to fully understand it you need to be familiar with Sport Compact Car magazine at its prime. Before there were "weblogs" to enjoy cars you had to wait every month for a guy in a funny hat to bring you some paper stapled together, and for most enthusiasts south of 40 years old and outside the Deep South it was SCC.

Ostensibly about sporty compact cars, it was really about a new generation enjoying cheap, fun automobiles without nasty NOPI girls posing in front of them. It didn't last. The magazine was eventually gutted, then canned, and the talent moved on.

SCC's Ed Loh is now the Executive Editor of Motor Trend, Dave Coleman works for Mazda (which kills me, he'd be great on the web), and Josh Jacquot now works for Edmunds.

Andrew Campbell, who owned this car, had it featured in SCC for their Ultimate Street Car Challenge. It's a 462-rwhp turbocharged Miata and, though long gone, Campbell wanted it to be featured on Jalopnik, too. But he didn't take the shot, Josh did, so he couldn't give me permission (we take that seriously). For that I would need Jacquot's approval.

Josh, being a cool guy (I once did a lap with him in a CTS-V wagon around Laguna Seca and he's the fastest person I've driven with who isn't an actual race car driver), gave me permission to run it even though he's not sure he has that power. He says "it ain't my best work" but I think you'll all agree it's a ridiculously awesome.
