Former Nascar driver Jeremy Mayfield caught with meth and 50 guns

The road from Nascar driver to backwoods criminal's been a short one for Jeremy Mayfield, culminating in his arrest for possession of stolen goods, methamphetamine, and a small arsenal last night in Catawba, North Carolina.

Catawba County sheriff's deputies raided Mayfield's home after they were tipped off that he was in possession of unnamed stolen items. While there they found 6-12 bags of meth, said items, and approximately 50 guns.

This is only the latest drug-related incident for Mayfield, who was suspended indefinitely for drug use after failing a pre-race test in 2009. He sued, unsuccessfully, stating it was a mixture of his ADHD medication and Claritin-D that caused him to fail the test.

His sad history with meth goes back, with his estranged stepmother alleging he used to cook his own meth at a race shop in the late 1990s.

Someone going by the name Brenda Hilgenberg on Twitter says this was latest arrest was a "set up," to which Mayfield's wife Shana Mayfield replied "Such a shady deal. Makes no sense!! : ("

Mayfield was released on a $3,000 bond.

You know, it used to be you'd go from bootlegger to Nascar driver. Now, apparently, it's the other way around.
