The group attempting to bring a Robocop statue to Detroit over the mayor's indifference just scored a major victory after securing a $25,000 matching grant from the company Omni Consumer Products. Wait, what?
Fans of Robocop will remember Omni Consumer Products as the dystopian behemoth corporation in the process of privatizing Detroit, which "in the future" has fallen into financial ruin. Thankfully, this company, run by San Francisco businessman Pete Hottelet, merely makes licensed real versions of fictional products from films (Stay Puft Marshmallows, BRAWNDO: The Thirst Mutilator, Sex Panther Cologne).
When they heard about the campaign to build a Robocop statue in Detroit, which was launched by a random tweet to Detroit Mayor Dave Bing, they agreed to match funds raised for the cause. The total raised so far is $50,000.
