Many people passively appreciate cars, but the term "gearhead" means something more. Gearheadism is a special condition bordering on affliction. But what makes a gearhead?

The most obvious sign of a gearhead, the trait we think is universal, is a lack of concern for one's own well-being when faced with an automotive challenge. If you're willing to risk burns from welding or possible amputation from flying blades to get an old Toyota pickup working, or possible cancer from inhaling God-knows-what, and can count the busted knuckles on... well.. busted knuckles, you've got the makings of a gearhead.
