Welcome to Down On The Street, where we admire old vehicles found parked on the streets of the Island That Rust Forgot: Alameda, California. Here's the first 411 I've seen on the street in at least a decade.
The Type 4 was only made from 1968 through 1974, and only sold in the USA for the last few of those years. They were uncommon when new, and vanished in a hurry. They were fairly affordable at $2,999 (about $16,500 in 2010 bucks), but that was more than $500 above the VW Type 3's price tag. Head over to your local Chevrolet dealer, and a new 6-cylinder Nova could be yours for a mere $2,405.
This 411 looks to be in great shape, and I've seen it around town enough to believe that it's a daily driver. How many of these are still on the street nowadays? A few thousand, worldwide?
