Alameda has quite a few 1960s Mustangs on the street, but our last one was months ago. This '69 always parks on the street (not far from the '60 Studebaker Lark), though it's usually under a car cover. However, it does get regular driving use, as I learned when I talked to the owner (who says he gets offers on the car from other drivers at stoplights).

And no wonder- this car is very clean and sounds great. It's not an obsessively restored show car, but about as nice an example as you're going to find living outdoors and driving frequently.

Scoops all over the place. It must be fast!

Actually, with the optional 351 under the hood, it is fast. The standard engine on the '69 Mustang was the 200 six-cylinder, and most buyers went with the 302 V8. By hacking the car all to hell, Ford managed to fit the monstrous Boss 429 in the cramped confines of the Mustang engine compartment. Hey, if they can put a man on the moon...

do those scoops count as speed holes? niles gotta have it!
Quite nice. Mustangs were the only domstic cars that looked good in fastback (IMHO)
domestic
This makes me dislike the current Retrostang even more.
Beautiful....
Something tells me that I don't going to be awed in 2047 seeing a Civic coupe with scoops and nice rims...
This car looks like an 'almost Mach 1' Maybe the owner(s) dressed it up through the years. The 351 is nice, and probably saved it from a life as a garage queen that a 428CJ would bring.
This thing is sweet.
Man, I really gotta start taking pictures of the cars I see at my college every day. '66 Mustang, '65 Sting Ray, and yesterday a really well put together Shelby Cobra kit car with a big block V8. Sometimes I almost don't make it to class on time.
That's my favorite year/body style for the Mustang of all.
@JantheMan: [i2.photobucket.com] How can you say such a thing, they ooze style.
@layabout: I thought that oozing was combined resin, diapers and bubblegum.....style makes me nauseous.
OK, this Alameda thing is starting to freak me out. Like, where are the Accords, the Ford Explorers and similar what-not? Is Alameda a total time warp?
That's a good looking car. It looks mean and fast. What a great design. The current one is bleh as are all the other new retro muscle cars. Too chunky. They don't look mean or fast they look like they want a doughnut.
I love those mags, Had them on my 66 Chevelle, it should be +5pts.
Could the lovely Ms Martin stop posting these, some of us have work to do(but not for much longer).
@Benson2175:
I disagree, the current Mustang looks like it wants to eat a Civic. It's a great looking car.
The Mustang finally looks like a real and honest Mustang again. It carries the iconic and distinctive Mustang look of the originals. They stand out even more today on our roads filled with jellybeans they did back then to boot. I'll take a new Bullit, Shelby GT-H or GT500KR any day.
Wow, what a beauty!
@Parramore46:
It also could have been a Mach 1, but the tape stripes identifying it were removed or painted over sometime in its life.
Mach 1s also had high-back seats and distinct carpets. Too bad we can't see inside.
My friend in high school had a 1970 Mustang, and somehow it never looked quite as cool as this vehicle. Perhaps the general suckage of the 70's actually began with the 1970 model year.
Needs more POLAЯ behind the wheel! That car is so stealable.
@layabout: @JantheMan: If you pick the worst examples of any car, it's going to look terrible. I think a Civic hatch on a nice pair of 16" rims with no (or a few tasteful) body modifications looks good, and suprisingly sporty. And if it's got a B18 swap, it can be pretty quick.
As far as this car, I love it, and I love that it hasn't been obsessively restored to numbers-matching status. If I owned it, I'd be tempted to swap in a crate engine and run some big ass DOT slicks on it. Either that or convert it to a replica Boss 302.
My girlfriend was conceived in the back of a '69 Mach I with a 390 and a 4 speed. Her dad eventually sold it for about $800 when they needed something that a) could fit the family, and b) got more than 9 mpg...tuned up. I think they ended up with a Granada.
She still lusts after a '69 Mach I. And I support her in this endeavor. ;)
@TattooedMess(iah): What institution of higher learning do you attend?
@elwood: Rather awed than surprised. We can agree on the car above for sure
Fucking hot! Would like to see it after a nice paint job, but it looks good as is... like the owner likes his ride clean, but cares more about what's on the inside.
This car hits all the right buttons. Slotted mags, raised white letter tires, black hood, all the scoops in the right places. Great find!
I'd like to think the owner did a repaint and prior to adding back the tape stripes, he saw what a beauty it was in white and left it that way.
@DoggieDaddy: Are you Torino/Barracuda/Marlin/Riviera/Sting Ray/Charger etc. fans gonna let him get away with that?
Wow, that's clean. Slotmags make it, really.
@DoggieDaddy: It appears that someone's never seen a Nash/AMC Marlin.
Now this is some American Iron I can get behind. Badass but not fatass.
Not to mention, the '49-'50 GM "Jetbacks", and THE TUCKER TORPEDO.
I rest my case.
Sweet car! The '69 Mustang is so far the only one I would consider owning. Make mine black with Magnum 500's please.
My brother had one,Going down the interstate the chain on the throttle linkage came off.If you are familiar with them the carbarator would go WOT. My brother let the car runaway with itself till the tach redlinedat around 150 mph. Then turned the key off and we coasted for about 3 miles. Pulled over and reattach the chain.
Now that's a real Mustang.
@Parramore46: Nonetheless, the 351's still damn quick!
One of my favorite DOTS cars so far. Not as stereotyped as the earlier 'Stangs, yet not obese like the '71-'73 models. Perfect, perfect car.
@Murph:
Well, if you drive through the tube (yes, the main route to Alameda from downtown Oakland and back is through a pair--not a series--of parallel tubes) at 88 miles per hour there are a lot of flashing lights...
@TriShield: Sure sure but I've got to have my daily anti-new thing rant.
My favorite Mustangs are the '64.5-'66 model years, the '67-'68 less so due to being a bit fussy and overdone in the details. The '69, as exemplified by this DOTS entry, returned to the lean and mean look that I think any real Mustang should embody. I do miss the days of anti-glare black hoods, having lusted after an Opel Manta outfitted as such when I was 11 or so.
What's next, Murilee? Are you going to show off all of my Junior High fantasies and give me rocket powered lowrider Chevelle with machine gun turrets or what?
69-70 Mustangs were the best Mustangs ever.
@voodoojoo: Speaking of Chevelles and not having cameras, as I was about to launch my commute a yellow and black 70 Chevelle--which I heard rumbling before i saw it--my rear view mirror was vibrating--burbled by me and headed west on I64. Had antique plates (I think that's 25 years in VA) which was also really sad, because it means my youth is also now officially antique.
@voodoojoo: You forgot the submarine feature and associated harpoon gun.
Drool.. !
I live next door to Chuck Francis' "Dream Machines" and see this kind of Mustangs daily.. one day...
@Paul Y. is Going Dumb at the Sideshow: @SpeedWagon: I never really got those aluminum slotted wheels; I always thought they looked cheap, and only belonged on plain, cheap cars.
I had them on my '70 Datsun 510; they looked right at home there.
But this mustang needs some very chrome Cragar SS or Appliance wheel equivalent. That or the Ford rallye wheel of the time.
@lascauxcaveman: I've always loved those wheels. When I was little, they'd often show up on cars I drew.
If I could get a set onto my xB, I would.
I'd like to see Furd put this car's face on the 2009/2010 Mustang.
@graverobber- Same great taste, new low price!: Funny you should mention the Manta. I had a '72 Rallye in Pu**y Magnet Yellow with the flat black hood. A/R 4 spoke mags with BFG D60X13 T/As, Koni shocks, and that wimpy little 2brl Solex exchanged for 2-40 DCOE side draft Webers and a header. My SCCA brothers hated me .....
