Yesterday, Ray and Wes met KITT in the flesh— er, metal. Today we bring you the video footage of us doing our best Hasslehoff impression during our exclusive Brooklyn rendezvous. The new Knight Rider made-for-television movie premieres tomorrow on NBC, so our test drive ride just came right at our peak of anticipation. And while we still kinda agree with the "never meet your childhood heros" rule, we've gotta admit that the supercharged Mustang GT in GT500KR clothing looks and sounds pretty sweet.

Does that steering wheel suck?
k i tts ucKs
Hey, that was all I got....
No, no, no! Fire your damn stunt drivers. It's a Rockford turn out of the moving trailer at 50mph, preferably with the tires smoking!
The GT500KR is a cool car. The Super Snake is even better! But I still don't think it's the right car for KITT, since not only is it not high-tech and futuristic, it's RETRO! Since they are using it though, they should at least fit it with black wheels. And to answer DylanSeals question, yes, that steering wheel sucks bigtime! =)
The handcrafting skill of the interior is amazingly beautyfull. I find it to be telling of the level of professionalism and quality that this show will undoubtebly have.
@Omaxem: joking right? check the fins in #9566 & 9580. All the craftsmanship of an 11 year old with model glue.
I really hate those rims. Junky, not sinister. Baby needs new shoes.
It would have been cheaper for NBC to have used the last production model Firebird, which would have been better than using a Mustang. I agree using retro for futuristic is anachronistic, if not monumentally stupid.
I'm in the minority to say the new Mustang blows design-wise, but it's even worse that it's turned the show into a shill for Ford.
The original Knight Rider was a nice kitschy show, I see no reason to continue it, since it's obvious they didn't go the serious route which makes the new show even worse. It'll do probably as well as the Bionic Woman remake.
@dylanseals: Is that question rhetorical?
@Mike the Dog: Yeah, I just couldn't imagine driving at speed with that wheel. As I remember the old kit had what appeared to be someone's idea of a futuristic joy stick wheel. Even at six years old i knew that was bullshit.
Dont understand the fascination with this crappy tv show car; if we have to discuss crappy tv show cars, lets at least mention the Dragula from the Munsters. One more variation of a Mustang and Im gonna puke.
@IamZardoz: You should be carefull then. You might get an ulcer.
I would be very surprised if this show actually lasted more than five episodes, but the car itself doesn't look too bad. The red nostrils remind me of L.A. Lights high-tops for some reason, but that's not it's fault.
P.S. : Does anyone know if KITT is equipped with SYNC?
I will spare the complaining that's an old style car at a high tech Kitt. My questions to Ford is, why not the Ford GT instead? That thing still looks futuristic today. I'm sure they are hoping people will buy Mustangs as a result, but the GT looks much kicky assier.
This car should have more black on it and those rims do not go to well with the rest of the car.
With that said I am still looking forward to this tomorrow.
By the way NBC is repeating it again next Saturday in case anyone misses it or if it's really good.
@Hello_Newman:
You realize of course the GT is an also a old style car, based on the awesome GT40?
But yeah, it's not in production any more and didn't need any advertising anyways.
@everyone, I think this is a movie, not a series.
If I had parked my car where you guys were playing around I would have raced to my car to move it!
Oh, and did this KITT have a turbo boost button?
Where'd they get the steering wheel for that thing?
@rlj676: So far just a movie. It could potentially turn into a series if it's good, which I hope it is and does. (I'm hoping that someone learned a lesson from the last two previous attempts).
@Nightwing: If they had learned anything, this wouldn't have happened.
@lemondriver: (With fingers in his ears mumbling) don't want to listen, don't want to listen...it will be good, it will be good, it will be good...
Then again in Knight Rider 2000 there was never any mention of a Knight Industries 3000...maybe it broke down and that's why the Knight Industries 4000 had to be introduced???
Then again with all do respect to Ford I don't recall seeing a Mustang broken down on the side of the road. I've seen plenty pulled over by the cops though on the side of the road though ;).
@gadgetfanatic: It's a hemi steering wheel!
Old shows never die, they just fade away. Like this one will. Why doesn't NBC's "Bionic Woman" and "KITT"
combine to transform themselves into the "Bionic KITT"
and challenge the "Terminator".
The only problem is if the transformation accidentially
turns to Jamie. It's all over for the "Bionic Woman",
no, not again.
Uhhh... I just thought of something...
What are we gonna do if the show is actually entertaining?
I'm just sayin'!!!
@IamZardoz: The charter for this blog is "obsessed with the cult of cars", so Los Jalops are dutifully reporting on "Knight Rider" as per the program. You may not like it, but then you might not like Buicks, yet they are still covered under the mission statement! No flaming dismissals, just observe and comment/critique in a respectful (and even better, humorous) manner. Everyone deserves an opinion...
Less Knight Rider, more -aminos!
@Triborough: KITTchero!
A Toyota won the Daytona 500. Who knows, maybe a Mustang will win the Tour de France. For all I know Knight Rider is a documentary and will run on PBS. Time for my meds.
@UDMAN: nice little hidden message.
and i'd gladly trade in my mini for this car, if anyone wants to. haha
that momo racing wheel looks like an absolute joy to drive with.
@smokeydog001: unless you're commenting from the year 2010 or so, a Toyota has yet to win the Daytona 500...
and now it's bugging me. did Wert or Siler make any mention on how the driver shifted this thing?
Will the Jalopnik guys get a KR now??? Or will they wait for a ZR1 and get that with their wad of NBC Knight Rider promo money. Hope they gave you guys a T-Shirt to!
SCREW the Mustang, use the MAZDA FURAI [jalopnik.com] and [jalopnik.com]
Hey, what the hell. Leno got to drive maniac version with a wing and black wheels, you guys drove the wussy "civilian" model. Lame.
isn't using the steering wheel like riding a horse by holding its ears?
@Charles_Barrett: Well, almost everyone
@Novaload: It doesn't have a top part and a botom part, all it has is the sides, Why can't I get one like that for my car.
@gadgetfanatic: MOMO does sell a few wheels kinda like it, but the wrapping on the KITT wheel is probably custom. they're raceing wheels, so there's no airbag, which would probably be the only reason you can't put it in your car...
personally i think the original-style wheel is cooler and even less practical. [www.knightpassions.net]
@smokyburnout: Thanks for the link. I never saw a closeup of the steering wheel and always wondered what the symbol was on it.
I wonder how long it'll be before red scrolling LED bars are put in grills of all the 4th gen Civics and Accords rolling around? I bet they'll be the new LED washers. Unfortunately.
That supercharger and the matte stripes don't really scream out 'Knight Rider' to me...
Change the steering wheel back to something normal and remove the scrolling LED bar, and it resembles an updated KITT a lot less than an updated version of the ol' black-on-black XB Pursuit Special from Mad Max.
I'd love to see a retro Aussie KITT Holden Kingswood. Bruce Knight. "G'day Bruce me old cobba," quoth KITT.
@Number_Six: Speaking of Aus - the new Falcon was revealed today. Looks pretty good, at least in some models. No Dave, more kinetic mimicking.
As for KITT, I not bothered about the Mustang since I have no real attachment to the original. If it looks good (sort of) and sounds good (def), then why not roll with it?
@SMOKYBURNOUT
Of corse you are correct, it was the Nationwide Series opener.
@wild zero: Really like 'em (especially the utes) but unfortunately I am not in Oz.
HAVE U GUYS BEEN TO MYSPACE!!!!! Theres an urgent message from KITT!!!!Its actually kind of cool. Anyway you guys should check it out.
If I remember correctly, the original steering yoke was to facilitate the talent get in and out of the car, and was designed to help maximize camera shots. It didn't hurt that it helped make the car look more futuristic.
Why should it have a steering wheel? It should pretty much just be there to keep the human occupant happy, because we all know KITT should be better at driving it's self around.
The only atheistic that I don't really agree with is the break in the middle of the "scrolling eye". At least they didn't update KITT with blue Sharper Image LEDs.
@smokyburnout: It's the millenium evo with the top cut off. The whole thing at least carries a cheesy half-ass tv special feeling, which I suppose is appropriate...
All the people who say the show will underperform and shouldn't have come back are actually GM fans but afraid to admit it. Face it, your car car company screwed the pooch on the Camaro/Firebird many moons ago. The car looked like ass even when it played KITT on the original series.
And if you're all so good at predicting how well a TV show will do WTF are you doing sitting at your computer posting in this forum?
