After being so inspired by all the interesting comments referring to grandparently Ford LTDs in yesterday's DOTS post, I asked Señor Hardigree if I might do the QOTD honors today "Ooooh! Ooooh! I got a good one!" I jabbered at him. "Gimme that QOTD!" So, here we go: Get on the horn to your parents or siblings or orphanage managers- whoever is in a position to tell you what sort of car got this whole mess started for you. Maybe it was the car that took newborn you home from the hospital (and you get Über Jalöpnik Bonus Points if your parents stopped by the Stop-N-Rob's parking lot to spin some celebratory donuts on the way). In my case the car was a '56 Olds, which I thought was kinda cool... until I asked some of my coworkers and found one whose first ride was in a '62 ZAZ-965 in Ossetia.

can't be sure, but most likely a mid 60's Rambler American 2 door with 3 on the tree.
'68 307, 3speed Chevelle Malibu 2-door coupe.
Grandfather bought it new for my Mom to drive to college.
We still have it. In the garage.
My parents say it was a green '62 Chevy 2 convertible.
Ha! I have a good one. Mine was nearly new Chevy Corvair. It died in a snow storm on the trip bringing me home from the hospital and wouldn't restart. I guess I was 2 or 3 days old. Dad traded it for a Ford (a Fairlane I think) later that week and has driven Fords ever since.
Probably a '67-'68 Karmann Ghia or Beetle.
The first I can remember was an '85 Porsche 911 'SuperSport'.
I was a little blonde haired boy and threw up everywhere due to excessive speed.
The sounds of my father still haunt me to this day.
1969 Austin Mini Countryman with wood panelling. Probably sparked my love of wagons.
1985 Dodge Colt, light blue 3-door hatch. I even got to sit on my daddy's lap and everything!
Second was a DAF 66. But ZAZ!
A yellow early 80s Mercedes 240D
Love the whaleshark mouth on that Olds.
I have no idea what the folks drove home from that hospital in the Philippines....prob a 50s era 'Merican car.
I know what my kids came home in: 10 year old, Volvo 850 Wagon (normally aspirated 5 speed); 7 year old, Audi A4 Avant (MTM'd Tiptronic).
1980 Chevy Malibu. 4-door and boxy, the way cars should be....in the summer my mother had to place a beach towel over the steer wheel because it would heat up so violently. The metal seat belts and door handles used to singe my little kid fingers. The interior was like a furnace until winter, when you had to leave the thing to warm up for 15 minutes before you could drive off in her :P
'64 Plymouth something-or-other. Dad sold it a few years after I was born because he couldn't get it to run. Turned out all it needed was a new battery.
Dad has learned a great, great deal about cars since then.
I have a vivid memory of my mom's beige VW squareback. I remember looking up at the perforated white headliner and the white vinyl hand loop thingy. I must have been less than two years old.
Both my kids came home in a 1986 Hyundai Excel. We kept the kids, but got rid of the car.
1979 AMC Spirit, 5spd, 4cyl. light blue.
I have told this here before.... My first ride was in 1966 in a red Ford Mustang convertible.. I was 4 or 6 hours old.. from the hospital to home.
My second ride was a few months later in my mothers bicolor Austin-Healey 100S... I have 16mm footage of both... in 1970 she exchanged the Austin-Healey with an yellow MGB.... I remember she would bring me to school in the rain and the car would go in all directions except straight on.
Datsun 1200.
I believe it was a brand new 1976 VW Rabbit. Springtime green. I think it's still on the road after being passed around to family and friends.
What a ride home from the hospital I had!
1970 Oldsmobile Cutlass S Rallye 350 hardtop. Hurst 4 speed, bucket seats, and a sweet all black interior. Both my parents and I agree we all wish we still had that car.
I also recall driving (on my fathers lap) this car down the driveway, and getting my fingers slammed in the door (although I only really recall laying on the dirty driving writhing in pain and seeing that yellow rear bumper!).
99% certain it was a 1967 Chevelle Malibu 4-door, 4-speed, 325/327. First car my dad ever bought new, and it's been sitting in his garage since the late 70s. One of these days...
I was brought home in a mint-green 1954 Ford. And it was only a year old at the time, so yes, I'm relatively ancient. I also remember crying at having to leave this car at the dealership as a trade-in when my parents bought a brand new 1958 two-tone blue Ford Custom 500.
Without actually calling my parents to confirm. I believe it was the 59 Impala 4dr hardtop that sat in our backyard for about half my childhood. Remember Dad finally sold it bacause someone wanted the 283 in it. Might have been some other red full size Chevy with a white vinyl top, I have vauge memries of that. The first car I remember riding in is a 74 Chevy Caprice, blue 4dr hardtop.
1972/73 Renault 4.
In bright orange.
My father drove my highly pregnant mom to the hospital, hazard lights on and finally plowing through the flowerbed at the hospital entrance, because there was an ambulance blocking the road. :-)
Colour like the one on the left, grille from the one on the right: [static.flickr.com]
Ford Escort Mk3 [images.forum-auto.com], then we had a Mk2 Golf.
55 Olds - it's what I came home from the hospital in, and then a 1960 Valiant (one of the first in San Diego).
When I was born, my parents were driving an '85 Pontiac Sunbird (their first new car), I'm assuming that's what I was brought home in.
Blue 1977 Chevy G10 van, hehe.
When I made the decision to say hello to the world, my dad took my mom to the hospital in Bob Seger's Black Ferrarri 308. No. Really.
He worked at an import auto repair place in Detroit and had wanted to take some time off around when I was due. Unfortunately, the place was slammed and his boss couldn't let him off. So to make up for it, my dad's boss told him whatever the fastest car they had on the lot was his for the day. He didn't know who's car he had actually taken till the next day.
The actual car I was brought home in was a Rolls of some sort.
I came home from the hospital in a 1974 Buick Electra.
But the first car I ever remember riding in was a 1986 Mercury Sable.
Crappy 1971 green Chevy Nova. Apparently one of the wheels came off and we skidded along a major roadway with me acting like a pinball in the backseat. Growing up in Lansing,home of BOC (Buick Oldmobile Cadillac) we had little choice but to drive old detroit steel.
@petedmeatv:
Awesome story.
@Race7117: I was born in Sparrow.
My first ride was in a 68 LTD - green with black landau top. Dad traded his 64-1/2 Mustang Convert for it when Mom got pregnant. .....Some say the Mustang was the reason for the pregnancy.
I came home from the hospital in a 1969 GTO.
1976 Chevrolet Malibu Classic "sport" sedan, powder blue with medium blue interior. The car was purchased about 3 months before I was born.
My first ride in a 4-wheeled vehicle was either in a brown Datsun 210 Wagon, or a mid 70's Datsun Pick up truck, much like the DOTS the other day. [jalopnik.com]
I rode home from the Hospital in my Dad's 1965 Impala SS. Had Bucket seats and was a Silver/blue color. I can remember as a lil kid thinking it sounded like the most powerful car in the world and compairedm to my Mom's 1968 Beetle, it look huge and sleek and I think that car started me down this debaucherous road of car lust!
I vaguely remember seeing a picture of my parents loading me into a 74ish Capri at the hospital. First car I drove (and crashed) at 1 y.o. was a '66 T-Bird. First car I remember riding in was a 240z, which affected me so deeply that I search listings every day even though I'm in no position to buy one. Someday.
@Greg A.: Beige squareback -- that's the car from my earliest memories, too. Funny you note the grab handle, because that was burned into my memory, too. Probably from so much time in the back seat.
@petedmeatv: You never had a chance at escaping the sickness, did you?
@beta.rogan: A 1977 B210 actually.
Can't be sure of the year (I'm gonna say '69) Dodge Dart Swinger. A hand-me-down from my paternal grandparents and the first of at least a half-dozen Darts my parents owned during my childhood. My father rolled it during a snowstorm a year or two later.
The first vehicle I actually remember riding in was my aunt's blue Swinger- in a vinyl & chrome-tubing booster seat, no less.
The 'rents said I came home in my dads yellow Datsun 280Z. But my earliest memory was '85 Malibu.
I'm not sure of the first car i rode in, but i was born somewhere in the Ford Galaxie.
1972 Chevelle SS (red with black stripes and black interior). 350 hipo with an auto. My dad put the car in storage shortly thereafter - the sole reason being that he did not want my mom to drive it because she doesn't believe in parking at the very end of the parking lot everywhere that she goes.
In very short succession, a 1954 Chevy 150 two-door sedan, and a 1951 Dodge Meadowbrook four-door. Mom's car was the Dodge (Gray), and Dad's was the Chevy (Navy Blue) I was born in 1956, and I remember they kept these cars right up to the 60's, when dad bought a 2 year old 1958 Chevy Wagon, and mom got a used 1959 Rambler.
I came home from the hospital in my Dad's '67 396 Chevelle SS that he bought brand new. It was a 4 speed with a posi-rear, and it had chrome reverse wheels on it. It was also painted in the rare Royal Plum color which was offered for that year only. It was just a 325 horse car,but Mom and Dad both said it ran very well! These pics look better in person! That was awesome,but it jumped out of gear and rolled down an embankment at a shopping center. The car was bent so bad it had to be totalled. He then got the Nova SS I;m washing in my avatar.
Here's a pic or two:
1970 Ford Maverick. Though it headed to the crusher before I was four years old, I remember it very clearly, especially the black-and-white plaid seats.
@Bento:
When my Fad had his Chevelle,my Mom had a Beetle too!
1946 Ford convertible. I've seen the photos, but unfortunately I don't remember a thing.
1979 Fiat 147
I was born in 1983.
Yuck.
@AllenK: The theme to the Wonder Years is playing in me head looking at those pictures...
@Bo Darville:
None whatsoever.
Now I find my days wasted away trying to find the "perfect" project car for my dad and I to waste our weekends on.
@halfshaft: You don't know who your parents are?
'85 Chevy Suburban.. thats what i rode home in the hospital in the same year
'65 Chev Bel Air, black exterior/red interior, straight six.
Chevelles/Malibus seem to be winning. Fascinating.
An M200X Volantor

Born in 1973
I was taken home in my parent's Metallic Blue 1972 Plymouth Barracuda with a 318cu V8. It had the white strip down the side of the body that followed the angles of the beltline of the car, a white vinyl top and Crager rims.
I would love to have a new Challenger with a 4.7l V8 in metallic blue with the 1972 style white strip. I would even consider having the top painted white to simulate the early 70's vinyl.
@ÇitiŽen BrÅff:
Not really. I was left on the doorstep of a monastery.
:(
Talk about dating yourself--I'm such a baby that mine was probably a brown second gen Accord hatchback, but the first one I vividly remember was Dad's brand new 89 Legend, especially when he would shift it to "S" and speed around empty parking garages, always parking on the top level for the elevator ride and the view (though I needed a boost to see over the wall).
