Sadly, the desire to efficiently kill each other has driven the development of aircraft design and technology more than anything else. But what war plane represented the greatest step forward?

I'd point to the Messerschmitt Me 262, pictured above on the right. It stands out as the world's first operational jet fighter. It was designed before WWII, but you can see how modern it looks compared to a propeller-powered predecessor. It very clearly represented the future of flight.
