These Are The Fastest Depreciating Cars Over The Past Five Years

All of these cars have lost more than half their value in just five years.

Depreciation hits just about every single car the second they roll off the dealer lot, but some get slammed a lot worse than others. If they're big luxury sedans or SUVs, then you're looking at a five-year depreciation rate of over 50 percent, meaning a vehicle has lost over half of its value in just five years.

Anyway, I've had depreciation on the brain recently, and luckily for me, the kind folks over at iSeeCars decided to take a look at over 1.1 million vehicles sold between November of 2022 and October of 2023 to find out which cars depreciate the most in the past five years. Overall, the average car has depreciated 38.8 percent over the past five years.

It won't come as too much of a surprise, but BMW, Maserati and Audi are in the lead in terms of representation here. Both companies have three cars apiece on this list. But don't worry, we've also got plenty of MBs and Cadillacs to go around.

If you're looking for stuff on the other end of the spectrum, then cars like the Porsche 911, Jeep Wrangler and Honda Civic will fulfill you as anti-depreciation leaders, but who cares about those? We're here to see people lose their shirts on aging luxury cars, after all.

Before we dig in, a few things. "XX.X Percent Deprecation" in the slide titles is the percentage of the car's original MSRP it has lost in the past five years, and the dollar value below each photo is how much it has lost in real money. Now that we've gotten that out of the way, happy viewing!

15. Mercedes-Benz S-Class - 55.7 Percent Depreciation

$70,563 Value Lost

There's no getting around the fact that there is a ton of value lost, but honestly, I thought it would be more. In my head, the W220 S-Class is the poster child for depreciated luxury cars, but I suppose times have changed. Those are ancient now, and a 2018 S-Class is still a good car.

14. Volvo S90 - 55.8 Percent Depreciation

$35,365 Value Lost

I'm really surprised by this. The S90 is quite possibly the best-looking car on this list, and I figured it would have held its value better considering Volvo hasn't sold that many of them.

13. Audi A6 - 56.3 Percent Depreciation

$38,252 Value Lost

Think about the last time you saw a regular Audi A6. Bet it's been a while.

12. Cadillac Escalade - 56.5 Percent Depreciation

$59,093 Value Lost

Can you imagine what it must feel like to lose $60,000 over five years on a goddamn General Motors GMT product? I'm sick just thinking about it.

11. Audi Q7 - 56.8 Percent Depreciation

$41,731 Value Lost

No surprise here. It's a big, German luxury crossover after all.

10. Audi A7 - 57.2 Percent Depreciation

$48,917 Value Lost

The A7 has a similar issue to the A6. You never really see them, do you? S7s and RS7s sure, but not the A7. Too bad, because it's pretty.

9. Jaguar XF - 57.6 Percent Depreciation

$39,720 Value Lost

The world would be a lot more fun if people bought Jaguar XFs instead of E-Classes and 5 Series. I didn't say it would be better, though.

8. Maserati Levante - 57.8 Percent Depreciation

$55,858 Value Lost

The Levante may be a good-looking crossover with some pretty neat engine choices, but that's a lot of money to lose for a vehicle with the same starter button as a Chrysler 200.

7. Infiniti QX80 - 58.1 Percent Depreciation

$47,399 Value Lost

TIL the QX80 is still around. Good for Infiniti! Just a note, the QX80's twin, the Nissan Armada, was right outside the top 15 on this list.

6. BMW X5 - 58.2 Percent Depreciation

$44,828 Value Lost

The BMW X5 is a really good crossover. Too bad its depreciation is really bad.

5. Cadillac Escalade ESV - 58.5 Percent Depreciation

$63,885 Value Lost

$64,000 down the drain for a goddamn Tahoe. Good God.

4. BMW 5 Series Hybrid - 58.8 Percent Depreciation

$37,975 Value Lost

It's interesting that this is the only vehicle with an electric component on this list. That's just how it goes sometimes. Overall, hybrids have depreciated 37.4 percent in five years. That's actually about a point and a half lower than the industry average.

3. Maserati Ghibli - 61.3 Percent Depreciation

$58,623 Value Lost

The Ghibli loses so much money in such a short amount of time it's almost laughable. I guess it does make sense though, considering it is chock full of Chrysler parts.

2. BMW 7 Series - 61.8 Percent Depreciation

$72,444 Value Lost

Yeah, this tracks. It also means the only full-size German sedan to not make this list is the Audi A8. Congrats, A8.

1. Maserati Quattroporte - 64.5 Percent Depreciation

$90,588 Value Lost

How do Maserati Quattroporte owners go to sleep every night knowing they are losing this much money? It would literally consume my every waking thought and feeling. Brutal.
