It's official. The record has been set. Audi's 375-hp electric car — the Audi R8 e-tron — is the fastest "series production electric car" to lap the Nürburgring. Markus Winkelhock piloted the car around the 'Ring in 8:09.099.
That's nearly two minutes behind the Radical SR8 LM's lap time, but the SR8 is, well, radical. Because there isn't an official set of rules or sanctioning body for timing laps around the ring, we went with the ol' Wikipedia list to see which cars the R8 e-tron does compete with. Also in the 8:09 neighborhood are the Audi RS4, the BMW E63 M6, and the Honda NSX-R.
The R8 e-tron is not the fastest electric car, though. Toyota's rear engined electric race car, the Radical-based TMG EV P001, acheived a blistering 7:47.794 lap time. Still, e-tron's 8:09.099 lap time isn't too shabby, and it is a record setter, after all.
