Ridiculous Used Car Quote, A 500,000-Mile Bentley Continental GT And Tesla-Swapped Ariel Atom In This Week's Car Buying Roundup
A collection of our best posts of the week in car buying
The used car market, for the most part, has shifted back in favor of the buyers instead of the sellers. With deals to be had on most of your typical cars and incredible savings on EVs, it also means that some dealers are pulling out all the stops to get you in the door even if the real price isn’t what it appears online. This NJ dealer takes the cake for one of the most bonkers used car quotes I’ve ever seen. - Tom McParland Read More
The Lucid Air isn’t the most affordable electric vehicle on the market, but it’s absolutely fantastic. Even the least expensive version, which starts at about $70,000, offers 420 miles of range and can hit 60 mph in 4.5 seconds. Most people can’t afford a car that expensive since most people don’t make that much money in a year, but if you like the idea of the Lucid Air, there’s some good news. The used market has continued to do its thing, and prices are coming down. In fact, I just found one listed for less than $50,000. - Collin Woodard Read More
Buying a car with the express intent of keeping the miles low is perhaps the single worst investment anyone can make. Collector cars have not proven to appreciate significantly, and regular daily-driver-grade NPC-ass traffic cars like this 2009 Dodge Challenger SRT-8 definitely aren’t worth the space they take up in your garage while you’re not driving it. Someone purchased this car brand new in 2009 for $42,640, and across three different owners, it has been insured, stored, and kept up for 16 years. Now it’s your turn. - Bradley Brownell Read More
Marie lives in Seattle and after years of driving “hand me down” rides, she can finally treat herself to something nice. She wants a hybrid because her commute is long, it has to have a good stereo and needs to be somewhat stylish. With a budget up to $40,000, what car should she buy? - Tom McParland Read More
I’ve come across something we’ll likely never encounter again: a wrecked 2005 Bentley Continental GT that has been driven more than 500,000 miles.
This shocking find came to me by way of X user @CrazyWeeMonkey. The haggard Conti is listed on the auction site Copart, and at first glance, it looks like a fairly standard 20-year-old Bentley from Florida: blacked-out rims and tail lights, super dark tinted windows and tail lights. There’s nothing terribly impressive about it until you get into the details. - Lawrence Hodge Read More
When it comes to having fun and going fast, minimalism is often the name of the speed game, and the old-school lightweight speed ethos is on full display in this Ariel Atom track car. Instead of the 205-horsepower supercharged General Motors four-cylinder found in the Brammo-imported Atoms of the era, this wild machine has had a bit of a powertrain swap, now sporting the large Tesla motor from an older Model S P85 that’s pushing about 540 electric ponies to the ground. In original trim this car was capable of a 3-second 0-to-60 sprint, but you can imagine that with grippy slick tires and nearly triple the power it’s a bit quicker these days. - Bradley Brownell Read More
Today’s Nice Price or No Dice Super Coupe is probably the last truly interesting Thunderbird model ever made. Let’s see if this extremely well-kept edition from the North is worth bringing home the Canadian bacon. - Rob Emslie Read More
The Blobfish is generally considered one of the ugliest things on the planet—at least by those who have not yet made introductions with today’s Nice Price or No Dice SsangYong. Let’s decide what might be a fair price for this extremely rare and arguably aesthetically challenged private import. - Rob Emslie Read More
It’s safe to say that today’s Nice Price or No Dice Focus brings the goods when it comes to driving fun. Let’s see if this oft-forgotten hot hatch is priced to make good on those performance promises. - Rob Emslie Read More
Racing in the grueling two-week desert endurance spectacle known as the Dakar Rally is not for those weak of constitution. You have to be at the top of your game, mentally, physically, and emotionally, just to make it to the end of the race, and that’s if you have zero on-course issues. You might think you can handle the Dakar, but you just don’t have what it takes, you’re not built of tough enough stuff. Add in an extra level of complexity by running an exotic mid-engine French 4x4 rally raid machine from the late 1990s, and there’s just no way. Forget about it. - Bradley Brownell Read More
