If you’re anywhere near Detroit this coming week and love cars but are sick of all the usual car stuff, boy are you in luck. The Sketchbattle is back, and it’s happening at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, January 16! Sketchbattle is auto design twisted into a bloodsport, and you don’t want to miss it.

I’ve been to two Sketchbattles so far, and they’re always a blast. You get to watch real design professionals, many of whom work for major automakers, come up with novel ideas and render them on paper, under severe time crunches. It’s exciting, and the results are always fun.

There’s $2,500 cash at stake here! Think of all the Craigslist shitboxes you could get with that kind of money!

Look at this from the Los Angeles Auto Show Sketchbattle back in November:

Amazing! That was done in under 20 minutes by John Frye, who we’ve featured here before.

The organizers even let me sit in a round of these, both last year at Detroit and in LA just a couple months ago. Here’s our live feed from my round:

It’s a lot of fun. If you like automotive design. this is a great way to see actual designers in action. There’s really nothing else quite like it. Some members of Team Jalopnik will be there too, so you can come hang with us.

Even better is the fact that proceeds go to benefit Project Beautiful Inside & Out, which helps displaced women and their families get back on their feet. It’s for a good cause, people!

Go. Have fun. You won’t regret it.
