The Porsche 911 GT3 is over $60,000 cheaper than the McLaren 570S Track Pack and down almost 70 horsepower, so why did the Porsche just manage to beat the McLaren in EVO’s latest track test?
OK, fair, if you look at the rest of the numbers, the two cars are nearly the same weight, both have a seven-speed dual clutch, both have a top speed either just under or just over 200 mph, and both have a zero to 62 mph time of between 3.2 and 3.4 seconds, so it makes a little more sense that they’d serve as two slightly different formulas that end in a similar result.
After waiting for the rain to dry out at the National Circuit in Rockingham, UK, the 570S running Pirelli P Zero Corsa tires set a lap time of 1:19:51 and the Porsche 911 GT3 just edged it out with a time of 1:18:91 on Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 tires.
However, earlier in the day when the track was much more soaked, the McLaren was on regular P Zero tires, EVO claims it set a quicker, if still sloppy, lap time than the Porsche, which only had the slicker Sport Cup 2 tires in the wetter conditions.
The big asterisk here is the tricky track conditions for the cars, but just the fact that the 911 GT3 can get within a couple of seconds of the 570S Track Pack when pushed to its limits—and still cost such a drastic chunk of change less—may be enough to sway some people.
