Much as the shortness of this PV444/544 is custom, that it's a pickup probably isn't. Volvo sold PVs as bare chassis to some Swedish coachbuilders who made pickups for sale to the public. It's the basic ladder frame that helped Volvo make these PVs into the first of their long line of station wagons.
